I see all these sites advertising it but they don't let you download it!

http://www.gimp.org/windows/
Follow the link saying 'Automated installer' (As the official G.I.M.P. website only provides the source code, not the program itself, which must be compiled using the source - i.e. very complicated and you don't want to do it ) |

The GIMP = The GNU Image Manipulation Program
It's basically a free open source image editing program such as the likes of Adobe Photoshop and Jasc Paint Shop Pro. |

Well, I've never tried it on any other platform, but it beats using paint any day!

I've just downloaded it (windows) to see what it was like, after unzipping and installing the software, I couldn't find an exe file to actually launch the programme...any clues?

Did you download the right bit?
The link labelled 'automated installer' takes you to http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net where you must click on 'stable' under Downloads on the left panel. You then download both 'The GIMP For Windows' AND GTK +2 Runtime Environment. Install GTK+2 and then install GIMP. Then it should work properly. |
