6 Hours of Portimao [Race Thread]

First practice is done, and the Toyotas are ahead yet again,... but only a tenth to the rest of the LMH field.

Starting to really worry about Peugeot now. Other performance struggles were understandable, but they’re about 2 seconds off the pace at a track which should suit them and at which they’ve tested before.

Hoping it’s just them bedding in their changes

Would Peugeot be able to modify the car (add some kind of wing) if they need to at some point during the season?

They are allowed a limited number of upgrades to the car during the homologation period.

In FP2 Peugeot is off the pace so far, but so is everyone except Toyota and Ferrari!

Apparently they recently had a test at Paul Ricard, so you'd hope those changes are just about bedded in by now... Actually, I'm starting to wonder if part of Peugeot's issues are with them using wide width front tires, perhaps even with the FWD hybrid power deployment it's more difficult to extract the necessary pace from this year's tire specification.

Their theoretical best times are closer to Porsche & Ferrari so far after FP1, and it seems they've got a step up on the Cadillac this time out thanks to their testing time at this circuit.

To me LeMans is really the only track that will suit the Peugeot; that's the race they want to win more than anything, so I see them using these races really as just a way to improve the reliability of the car before the big race in June

What I'm struggling to understand with the system is can they BoP the Toyota alone without doing stuff to other LMHs?

Unrelated - a wild accident in the support series. No idea how it ended up there!

In this case, it would be better by leaving the Toyota as is, and changing the other teams. As the officials already have the essential information on all power trains on the grid, it doesn't take much to make the changes, either by intake or by engine mapping, to arrive at the levels required.

From what was said previously, it seems like they don't intend to do individual model BoP changes in-season this year, so in theory yes, they would be changing the BoP for all LMHs at the same time.

And, based on what we’ve seen so far, why would they?! Quick! Let’s repeat what we’ve said before:

The teams doing better are those who have a better handle on their cars.

And those that have realised how you do well with this rule set. It ain’t about absolute performance it is about being as close to that as often as you can. Toyota have that nailed with experience. Ferrari’s testing got its closest. Porsche not so much. Peugeot not so much!

But there are calls for it after every session. Something the ACO has been critised about before. If they’d reacted after Sebring then they’d need to rein that back a little from we’ve seen here so far.

And we know they aren’t touching it for a bit. Which is a good approach.

I have moved the Unifed team rankings thread from NA sub forum to hear to share the love.

One for who is doing best and how lap 37 in practice means we need to change the BoP.

Hedley Verity should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I was round the other side of the Rotunda when the accident happened so didn’t see it, but it was obvious it wasn’t a normal red flag situation as circuit vehicles were immediately on the move all round the track and internal roads, couldn’t believe what i was seeing when I did see the situation, very scary for a while until it became clear no spectators were involved
