Ferrari's plans for the future
A new (heavier) GT1 car is planned for 2009 according to a new interview with JMB Racing.
(no Le Mans Prototype planned) http://translate.google.com/translat...icles/jmb.html http://www.fiagt.com/teaminfo.php?teamname=JMB%20Racing http://www.jmbracing.com/ Michelotto will build it, right? Michelotto are contracted by Ferrari for the development of the Corse Clienti (Client Racing) cars as well as other specialty projects. http://www.michelottoautomobili.it/ New regs for GT1/GT2 cars "The GT1 category will be reserved for models with engines above 5.5L. The manufacturers or tuners will be able to choose between homologation at 650bhp/1300kg or 600bhp/1250kg. The GT2 category will be reserved for cars with engines under 5.0L. The manufacturers or tuners will be able to choose between homologation at 500bhp/1250kg or 450bhp/1200kg. For cars with engines between 5.0L and 5.5L, the manufacturers or tuners will be able to choose homologation in either GT1 or GT2." - http://fiagt.com/newsitem.php?key=1436 |

I guess the question is, whose GT1 rules is JMB talking about?

The new regs are still being discussed...so have to wait until the ACO and SRO can agree on something.
What car will they use? I'd assume a 599GTB unless a new Ferrari supercar comes out... |

Indeed the 599GTB is the most likely car, it has also been connected with a GT1 programme on more than 1 occassion if I remember correctly. Either way its good news for GT1, there is a distinct lack of news coming from that class at the moment and this is good news.

The following is from the August, 2006 issue of Racecar Engineering:
"Owner and technical chief of Scuderia Ecosse, Stewart Roden, is optimistic about Ferrari's future in racing: 'We had a few problems initially, as you might expect, but that's sorted. It's a good car, though next year I'd ideally like to have a 599 GT1 car.' http://www.scuderiaecosse.com/ |

Well there's one customer
I hope it won't turn out like the 575 GTC was and be unreliable and uncompetitive |

At the Dec World Motorsports meeting the ACO and the manufactures involved in sports car racing completly reject any of SROs ideas. My guess is they will build the car to ACO rules |

Because Ferrari whilst they are a big manufacturer arent as big as say the VAG group? Ferrari are commited to F1 at the moment and I doubt they have the money to start a full scale factory LMP1 programme like Audi or Peugeot.

I'd be more interested in Maserati's plans, they're the ones who will build a LMP1/GT1 car, not Ferrari, IMO.

I had a Maser 3200 a few years ago and the service guys always commented that there were more Ferrari badges on it than Maserati, as many of the parts had the Ferrari logo on them However they are all, at least, partly under the umbrella of the Fiat automotive group. |

Ferrari won't do this, as their intent will stay in F1.
Expect to see the Maserati in GT, once again based on a Ferrari platform (nee Enzo/MC12). The last time Maranello was interested in Prototype racing was the early 90's with the 330/333 SP. While competitive early in its life, the changes in the kind of opposition they would meet, along with the arrival of ALMS, told them that to maintain that competitivness meant that they had to pony-up (sorry ) more money, something that would put a serious crimp in their F1 budget structure. That was soooooo not happenning... From there on, GTs would be all they would enter into the sportscar fray. If a Prototype program is launched, it will be under the Alfa Romeo or Maserati name. |

i watched last night a few highlights of the 2001 FIA SCC races .. Magny Cours, Nurb and Mondello .. and the 333Sp won the champinship with Zadra .. so it must've been quite competitive still .. even if not fastest in outright speed..

True. As I recall, when Ferrari build their F50 GT's,these were significantly faster round Fiorano then the 333SP... Such a shame they never set it free in the racingworld. Just plain chicken if you ask me.
Let's hope the oncoming new techregs for F1 (freezing engine development for 10(that is TEN)years(!) might make them bored with F1 and finally provoke an all out "Cavalino rampante" attack at Le Mans... |
