Jos to be confirmed at Toyota at Spa?
F1-Live say sources have told them Jos Verstappen will be confirmed at Toyota this weekend.
Both Jos and his manager will be at Spa to make the announcement. ---------------------------------------------------------- Hmm not sure about this one, Mika for Jos is that a swap? |

Oh my life... what are they doing? Do they honestly expect Jos to be better than Salo or McNish? If they wanted experience, they should have kept Mika. If they wanted speed, they should have got Webber to sign on the dotted line. But VERSTAPPEN?!

Verstappen?
Not Webber or Da Matta as some people on this site have confirmed. There's been a lot of silly rumours here this week |

OK-ok, it's just a rumor and anyway the other seat is still unoccupied..... One thing I'm sure of is that McNish is not the one. Ouch I forgot about Panis... sorry.

Formula 1 Online can reveal that Jos Verstappen will be racing for the Toyota team in 2003, alongside Olivier Panis. The Dutchman has been without a drive this season after being dropped by Arrows at the last minute, but is to be named this weekend by the Japanese team as their second driver for the coming season.
The popular Dutchman would bring in sponsorship money, but also a wealth of experience which has been gained over the past 8-years in F1. Toyota yesterday announced that they were dropping both Allan McNish and Mika Salo, but have so far only announced Olivier Panis' to drive next season. Verstappen and manager Huub Rothengatter will be present for the Belgian Grand Prix, and current plans are to confirm the deal on Friday. www.f1.on.net |

This is ridiculous.
Look at whats out there on the market! Massa has confirmed not to be in for a testrole at Sauber. He wants to race, and he did well in 2002. Pizzonia has confirmed to be in line for a Toyota-drive, and Patrick Head and Frank Williams rate him high in a F1-car. DaMatta is probably on top of Toyota's wishlist, and if they really want to, they can probably have him. Jos hasn't even reached 20 points in 8-or-so seasons and didnt drive a racingcar since Suzuka 2001, let alone competativewise. Flavio Briatore got him out of the Benetton after 10 GP's. He still didnt think he was experienced enough to do the job. Herbert performed well enough to keep Jos out of the Benettonseat in 1995, and that was that. Most good drivers arent dependable on other drivers' to land a seat. Then in 1998 Jacky Stewart was very dissapointed in Jos' performance and attitude, so that contract wasnt renewed either. Oddly enough, again Johnny Herbert followed up (and again scored a victory!). Then in 2001 Tom Walkinshaw prefers Frentzen over Jos. He wants Frentzen that bad, that he almost literally tears up the contract. Now Toyota can have its pick at all sorts of young, promising drivers. Already having signed a well experienced one (he had his debut at exact the same race as Verstappen did, and scored way more points). One that they can mold. That should be the logical choice. I can't see why anybody would want to trade in Salo for Verstappen. Last edited by NiceGuyEddie; 29 Aug 2002 at 16:26. |

it is a shame with so much talent around that they might go for Jos ....but thats life i suppose . |

Jos is very talented, he scored more wins in F3 than Sato and scored a championship with 269 points in the 1993 german F3 championship, also won the marlboro masters and was 3rd in Monaco.
I was'nt too impressed with Massa personaly, I think Jos could have done better in that car! |

sorry.....i didnt mean that Jos has no talent .....he has ...im still impressed by his 1994 season at Simtek.....what i meant was....that i think Jos's time has been and gone , and there is so much good talent coming through at the moment , that it seems a shame that Toyota have gone for Jos when many people think he has pasted his peek.

2. All things considered, Massa did a thorough job. Not losing sight of his well respected teammate Nick Heidfeld. I believe the general view is that Massa has more promise to him today than Jos does. |

What Jos did pre F1 doesn't matter, it's what he's done since joining F1 that counts and that, to be perfectly honest isn't alot! 17 points from 91 starts! thats only 1 point for every 5.35 starts, compare that to Massa who has 4 points from only 13 starts, or 1 point for every 3.25 starts, i know who i'd rather have in my team!

Jos scored 10 in his first season, beeing the only Benetton driver besides TGF to score any points in 1994(Simtek was 1995 BTW).
the reason that Jos scored so few points has to do with the fact that he has a lot of mechanical failures on his cars(especialy Arrows in 96 and 2000, Stewart in 98 and Tyrell in 97), out 0f Jos's 91 races there where 41 DNF due to mechnical failures(engine,gearbox,suspension,electronics....) |
