Hi and welcome to 10 Tenths. I think you'd be better asking in Historic Racing Today forum but I believe it's too new for what you want to do.

Sorry but I think you'll find it a little too young, cut off being 1965. The correct body requires the 'Narrow Tunnel' version.[Mind you, there are plenty running round that have been converted!] But that leads to the extra expense of buying a narrow tunnel car.

Hi Stephen and welcome to the Historic forum, which is an accurate description of a lot of posters on here..... (Including me)

You can get FIA papers (presume you mean a Historic Technical Passport) for the car mentioned but what you won't be able to do is race it in pre 1966 events, which is the cut off date for most of the races and series run to FIA regulations. Although a GT version of the MGB was shown at the October 1965 Earls Court Motorshow I have a feeling that it was not on sale until 1966 so is not accepted as a pre '66 car. Sure someone will correct me if have got that wrong! Whatever, the homologation papers were issued on 01/04/1967, so that is the important date. The homologation number is 560, and papers listed as "Barely Readable" by the FIA.

As Terence states, the earlier cars also had a narrower transmission tunnel, and all open top Bs have to have this to be granted HTP.

So you can build your car up to homologated spec and obtain HTP for it, but the cost will probably outweigh the advantages of doing so. Better to check out the MGCC race series, HSCC Road Sports or CSCC Swinging 60s, all of which allow the GT as long as correct to their regulations.

Hope that helps.

Quite correct Mike,66 was the year of release. Although the GT was appreciably stiffer than the roadster, there obviously is the weight penalty. This being the reason why the works waited for the C to be built before continuing with the car.
Alternatively there was the fore runner to the BMC car,the Belgian ' Jaque Counse' version which wich is ellidgable for htp papers.

Stephen, good luck with the B GT. Definitely a cheaper option to the DB4.

Thanks for that-I didn't have the heart to mention it.

Yes,good luck with the project. The GT can still be made to go very well, and it has the stiffness as an advantage There is a fair bit of weight that can be saved very easily, almost as much to get it to roadster weight.

I would join the MG Car Club pronto as they run several series for MG Bs, although you will not be eligible for the GTS series for FIA type Bs and the like.

Of course FIA App K doesn't only apply to period F. Lest we forget the MGB GT appeared at Sebring as a prototype with a 2l engine, as a forrunner to the GTS campaign. So, it had international competition history in some form in 1967.

I thought that most of the FIA cars that race have the 2lt engine fitted as standard !

When I worked for an Austin/Morris agent in the mid 60s a new A40 was just over £600 and a Mini was £500 !

I think you'll find the cc rating was 2004cc,I know someone with the original spare engine, still in the crate! As the works car only ever ran that car as a prototype and its only ever race was in the states, its not actually classified as 'international'. MSA/FIA dont seem to have a world map!
