"While we're looking at Crystal Palace, check out this guy trying to kill himself in a mini..."
The Crystal Palace footage is Whitsun 64 BRSCC Saloon Car Championship Group 2(predecesor of BTCC). The Lotus Cortinas are, of course, #57 Clark & 58 Arundell. Jack Sears in the Galaxie blew a tyre at North Tower. The #77 Mini that crashed at Ramp in practice was Edward Lewis.

I think this is where I take up my usual position and point out that Mike Crabtree jumped the start in his Escort, landing a 10 second penalty. This means that Gerry Marshall actually won the race (and explains why he's so excited, waving at the end).
OK, biased rant over, going to take my Griffin for a walk now...

Actually it was a 60 second penalty so Crabtree was classified 9th.

My God that gives you goosebumps doesn't it. If you factor in that there on the day the air would be filled with the aroma of R30 as well. Incredible stuff. Brilliant.

The Palace was just fantastic - a short but fast circuit about the same length as Mallory. I wasn't there that day but was for many other meetings. Can you imagine a full field of quick F2 cars there - mindblowing! It called for precise driving with those close walls made from hard railway sleepers and no girly gravel traps. Great days gone forever, you would not be able to have open exhausts again in inner London anyway. Can it really be 35 years since the track closed?

Dan, Martin Thomas from Biggleswade in the 'Ovaltine' Camaro, the other that started at the back was I think Martin Birrane's Mustang. Not sure on Crabtree's engine in his RS1600, it had a 1992cc motor the following year in Group 2.

That was Mondello Park owner Martin Birrane in the Boss Mustang. It was an ex-Trans Am car that he brought over from the US. There's some more about the car here.

Yes yes I hear you VIVA! Bit harsh I thought considering the entertainment he brought to the party!

That is really wonderful footage that I have been waxing on about for years. I've got it on Betamax somewhere but am loathed to spend the £100 required to buy a player on Ebay!

I was at the Palace crewing for Roger Nathan when he debuted the BMW engined open top Costin Nathan GT, great place, shame we lost the new engine due to someone failing to tighten up the oil cooler hoses (not me I swear) after a ghoster the night before.

Oh the smell of Castrol R

I knew it wouldn't be to long before someone found a copy of this online.

I went to nearly all the CP meetings from late 69 until it closed in 73, so saw this race as it happened. The only thing is you can only be in one place at a time (I was at North Tower) so only saw part of the lap. I couldn't believe it when I saw the race on TV and caught up on the bits I missed.

All we need now is the Dave Morgan/James Hunt punch up - that was a classic!

Among the many beers, er conversations I was privileged to have with big Ger, that one came back the most.
