How to Enjoy Your Time @ Ten-Tenths

From time to time, the moderating team at Ten-Tenths re-examines the forums they work within, and assess what is going on in them.

It seems clear to the team that there are some users who need a little guidance as to what is acceptable and what is not acceptable posting etiquette on this site.

And also what to do if you the user think something is not acceptable and would like some clarity.

So a restatement of a few simple rules that are already a part of the FAQ's (and have been for a long time) is probably required.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Golden Rule

Attack the post not the poster

This is a must to keep a friendly atmosphere for everyone involved, do not come on here with the intention of causing trouble or starting a fight.

If you feel the need to start calling someone names then STOP, think about it for 5 minutes and then come back and give your response in a clearly less threatening way.

There is no need to start calling someone an idiot or fool or things much worse than that.

Remember this is a family forum treat people the way you want to be treated and things should be fine.

If people continue doing this then they will be warned no matter what the context, even if you are trying to defend yourself it will not be tolerated

Disagree with a post?

That’s fine, we all disagree with some things on the forums, but give your reply in a constructive manner without insults and you will definitely get a better response from other people.

If you see something that really shouldn’t be on here then use the WARN button (this button does not get used as much as it should).

A Mod will be along shortly to check it out and make alterations to the said post if needed.

We as Mods cannot be everywhere, so a little help from you the users is a great start to help us find the problems on the forums.

DO NOT just come on and start saying stuff like “This post is rubbish and the guy that wrote is a complete spastic, why do you Mods let him post???”

That helps nobody and may get you a nice little slap on the wrist for attacking a poster and attacking a moderator.

So PLEASE use the WARN button and explain the issue as best you can. If a Mod requires further clarification, you may be contacted via PM.

Dodging the Autocensor

DO NOT dodge the Autocensor.

It exists for a reason. Ten-tenths is a family forum and we want to encourage ALL walks of life and all ages to contribute.

These days computer users are getting younger and younger and we welcome them to Ten Tenths and look forward to their contributions to the site.

I’m sure many of you have young children and wouldn’t want your kids visiting a site where bad language seems to be accepted (Yes I know that they hear it at school, at home and on the street but they are not going to read it here)

We can have constructive conversations without turning this into a bad night out at the pub.

ANY dodging of the Autocensor may also receive a warning.

Posting Illegal Content

This is a HUGE grey area I know but if you didn’t write it then don’t post it, plain and simple.

DO NOT just “cut and paste” articles from other websites unless you have complete permission from the author.

Complete Press releases are not allowed

“Then how do we get the news across?” I hear you ask.

Simple, firstly we have a press release forum, if you have a press release to put out to the World Wide Web then use this forum. If you have any questions about the way that forum works then send a PM to the moderator of that forum and they will gladly help you out.

If you have found a press release (or article) on another website and think it would make a good topic of conversation then by all means start a topic but don’t just post the article word for word and add to the bottom “What do you think?”

A good way to deal with this is to firstly give a Link to the article or press release and then by all means you can “Cut and Paste” the bits that you feel are relevant to what you want to talk about and give a quick synopsis about the selected areas you have highlighted.

Also don’t just “Cut and Paste” the entire article and then remove the last few lines so you can say “I didn’t post the whole thing” that’s just cheating, if you have something to say then simply put some effort into writing a well rounded post (there will be marks added and it goes on your permanent school record folks )

The same applies to pictures as well.

Ten-tenths happily links to places like photobucket.com, but is only happy to do so when the images are your own, or you have the copyright holder’s permission to post those pictures.

The mention of illegal downloads will also be removed and the appropriate warning given, This also includes Video Tape or DVD trading. It’s simply copyrighted material and Ten-Tenths won’t be advertising it for sale.

Naming of Threads

Some are funny, some are clever, some are just plain bizarre.

It is helpful for other users if you give a thread a topic name that reflects what the subject is about, and also cuts down on multiple threads with the same conversation going on.

This is not a huge problem but have a think about it before you give it a name.

Sometimes you see at the end of the title of a thread "(MERGED x2)" and the like. This is where the Mod has seen a number of threads talking about the same topic, and it makes sense to confine the discussion to the single location.

What do I do if I have a problem with something on the site?

Easy, contact a moderator of the forum by PM (or use the WARN button if it’s a post you object to)

Discuss the issue with the Mod and they will give you an appropriate reply, if you are still not happy with the Mod’s response then if you check the FAQ then you will see there is a clear way to deal with this through the complaints procedure

Nodding Dog Syndrome

This is something that happens more and more when there is a selection of great new smilies available.

Sometimes there is a post that is spot on, is a pearl of wisdom, a strokes of genius… written by a poster or two on here.

Its great that you agree with the post, but quoting the post and putting a smiley face at the bottom with no other comment will not endear you to anyone.

If the post is interesting to you, please tell us why…

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Of course if you still don’t understand and want clarification on a certain rule then by all means PM one of the Mods.

But we are not able to talk about banned users, or reasons for other users being warned or not being warned as the case may be. You wouldn’t like us talking about your account and activities, so we won’t discuss other poster’s issues with you either.

I hope everyone understands that this isn’t having “a go” at anyone in particular but is aimed at the entire forum. I suggest that we all start thinking before we start posting and that way all of us users can continue to enjoy their use of the site.

This topic will remain a “Hot Topic” for as long as it’s needed
