Mallock U2

Arthur Mallock’s U2’s, everyone seems to have owned one at some time so something to get the thread rolling.

Arthur Mallock’s original Austin 7 based specials developed in the 1940’s and 50’s for trials and 1172 Formula racing.
Mk 1 1958 and first U2 with Mallock design chassis, engine and other components from the special, for 1172 Formula racing.
Mk2 1959 with similar chassis to the Mk1, centre pivot swing axle IFS and rear quarter elliptic sprung, 1172 Formula and Formula Junior racing. Chassis sold for the first time, perhaps 10 built of which 5 thought to remain.
Mk2B 1961 similar to Mk2 with coil sprung rear, possibly 1 sold.
Mk3 1963 development of the Mk2 with cross over swing axle IFS and coil sprung rear, perhaps 2 built although more said to exist today! 1172 Formula racing.
Mk4 1964 improved Mk3. F3 and sports car racing, perhaps 4 built of which 1 thought to remain.
Mk5 1965 improved Mk4 for Clubman’s Formula, perhaps 6 built.
Mk6 1966 development of the Mk5 with wider track swing axle IFS. Possibly 15 built for Clubman’s Formula, many of which remain today.
Mk6B 1967 development of the Mk6 for F2 and Clubman’s Formula. Few built, and those remaining could be updated Mk6.
Mk7 1968 Formula Ford with slimmer chassis and wishbone IFS, 1 built and raced by Richard Mallock.
Mk8 1968 development of the Mk6 for Clubman’s Formula with wishbone IFS, at least 12 built and many still remain.
Mk8B 1970 development of the Mk8 for Clubman’s Formula, a wedge tail replacing the rounded rear for the first time. Like the Mk8 popular and numbers sold.
Mk9 1969 Formula Ford, perhaps 5 built.
Mk9B 1971 Formula Ford development of the Mk9, small number built. The Mk9DD had De Dion rear and raced by Richard.
Mk10 1969 road chassis with a wide Mk8 chassis, 1 built which still exists in Germany.
The list continues to the current Mk35.

Mk 5. I bought a Mk5 kit from Arthur in the autumn of 1965 & built it up during the winter. I raced it in the 1500 Clubmans class in '66 and again in '67 with my co-owner Rod Cook. We sold it to John Goodhew for '68 who sold it for a Piper sports car in '69. We have never heard of it since & would love to re-acquire it. Does anyone know of any Mk5s?

Mk2 u2. Would like to trace some history on this cars early life.
Present owner Jane Beardsley.(my mum) Has owned car since late sixtys.
Previous owner George Coleman, i have been in touch with him and remembers selling car to my parents and would love to see the car again. He could be in luck as ive started restoring it after years of it been sat doing nothing. Chassis restoration work did start on it in the early 90's when i was working at Mallocks but got put on hold for a while!
If you went to mallocks 50th it was the car in the pics left out on the table (at Curbourgh with mustard yellow mudguards) saying have you seen this car. Thats how i got in touch with George.
Does anyone know of its earlier life or have any pics. we only have one with my dad (Ian) driving and i would love to find out more.

Hello, I have bought a Mallock MK8, registered No. 275, and would like to know, if anybody can help me to find out the specification in period. My car for ex. uses a pre crossflow engine and a 4-speed gearbox. I am uncertain about the brakes etc, which were recommended in period.

Alexander, I can't believe that someone has not been able to answer your query. I'm no expert but your best bet is to contact the Mallock themselves (they still exist - http://www.mallocksports.co.uk/), contact the Mallock Club (http://www.mallockclub.com/id2.html), or the Clubmans Register (http://www.clubmans.org.uk/).

The book, "The Lone Furrow", thes tory of Arthur Mallock & his racing cars (and much of the whole Clubmans category), may also help - Amazon usually have some.

Mallock U2.

I raced Mallock U2´s 1963 to 1965, in Formula 3 and Clubmans. I had a jig for the chassis, so as to repair/rebuild my chassis if bent. I also always had a part built spare chassis, and a couple of times when Arch Motors were very busy and Aurther wanted a chassis ´quick´ I had one, then used to meet him at the service station half way to his house. ( I lived near Brands Hatch.) I sold my F3 car to someone in Gravesend in the late 60´s, and it is now owned by John Fyda. a Formula Junior person, I was racing FJ and was at Pau, parked next to this U2. for 3 days. then realised it was my old F3 car. this car was not a FJ car. but was nice to know it is still around, I had 3 U2´s during 1963/5. i can confirm that a mk 4 is still alive and kicking in the hands of peter thurston and was competed at prescott hill climb in the late 90s early 2000s holding the claaasic class record for some 3 years in various times of 45seconds being the best . it also was drived my arthur in his last competive race and was devloped my my self and arthus mallock who confirmed by his drawings of the mk 4 its pedigree .any more details please feel free to call me 07850 345100 (the car is still in its original condition and get used on some occasions 50 year of mallock silverstone ) peter thurston

mk 4 still alive and kicking owned by peter thurston last used in anger by my self and arthur mallock at prescott hill climb (his last competition) held the classic hill record during the late 90s to late 2000 s authenticated by arthur himself as the last one he knew of .and in his the book the last furrow.,
arthur helped me develope this car and he has the original drawing of the mak 4 with which he identified it . any more details of this car please contact me and i would be happy to help 07850 345100 regards peter thurston

I own an early U2, it is a 3/4/5/ not sure of the differences between them? The car was last used in hillclimbs and was painted a Royal blue and fitted with a 1300 x flow Ford engine. It had been modified to take Triumph front wishbones and the rear had been altered to give it the look of the later cars but retaining the original rounded chassis back under the aluminium. It was running slicks and had Gurston Down championship stickers on it. I have owned the car for around 10 years and will get round to restoring it one day! Does the car ring any bells with anyone?...........Martin

The new site (.co.uk) was only listed in July this year so i'm told.

I never saw the old site, but am told there was a fair bit in it that has'nt been copied over to the new site.

May just be a matter of time.

I raced and hill climbed a mk2 U2 with great success including FTD at Harewood in 1965
Also raced a mk 6/8 B winning the Longton and District sprint championship in both 1970 and 1971
In 1972 raced and hill climbed a MK11 B with a 2 litre BMW engine

Hi I have owned a U2 for about 35 years I believe it to be a Mk4 when I purchased a pile of bits Form somewhere in Manchester The chassis was delivered on the roof of a Hilman Imp with all the rest in the boot. It stood on the drive for years and the kids found it to be a great climbing frame.
The only modifications I made to the chassis was to move the rear trailing arms outboard. Over the years the car was rebuilt up to the point of the engine. I was aiming to spec. it for Formula 1300. It has remained in the garage at that stage for the last 25 years.
I have now retired and want to complete it. I have all I need to complete it including the parts to build a Ford engine from a collection of any combination of Blocks, Cranks, & Heads, all pre Pinto.
If anyone can help with Identifing age and MK. I would appreciate it.
I have a collection of photos of the rebuild from the Chassis up.
If there is anyone wants to talk old Mallocks please get in touch.

Hi Clive, nice to hear that another early car has survived. I also have an early car, either a Mk3 or 4 I think there is very little difference between the two. The rear trailing arms make it earlier than a 6 as that is when they moved the rear arms to the outside. Best people to speak to are Richard and Sue at Mallock http://www.mallocksports.co.uk/ I was in there today discussing my car and they have three pre Mk6 cars in for restoration so now is a good time to have a chat with them. Hi Thanks for the reply.
How far along are you with the rebuild? Do you intend to restore it as original ? It would be good to see some pictures. I have some pictures but a lot of the early ones were destroyed in a fire.
I have some from the painting of the chassis on. Currently its in the half of the garage I have not seen in a few years. It was at the point of building and fitting an engine. Keep in touch Clive

Sorry for the slight thread hijack.... I've owned a car / chassis for a few years which I know ISN'T a Mallock, but it is very similar.

I'm ever hopefull that where people discuss Mallocks and early Clubmans someone might recognise it (didn't work on the Uphill racers forum, but might here?)

I've spoken to a few early Clubmans drivers, all of whom agre it's either an early Clubmans or a F1200 car

Here's a couple of photos of it as bought:






Anyone recognise it?
