TV coverage of Lydden

Well I have just watched the TV coverage of the first round coverage of the Quaife MSA Rallycross Championship from Lydden.
Lots of supercar action and some very good in car footage.
Also coverage of the heats and final of the Super mods.
Only showed the finals of the SH and juniors.
IMO better coverage than we used to get more informed commentry.
What do you all think?

Coverage was not too bad. But what concerned me was the number of dogs that appeared during the programme.

Was especially annoyed that Men and Motors was taken off Freeview, and even more annoyed I couldn't watch the Rallycross as a result

Can anyone encode it and upload? Or is it a question of asking someone to Sky+ a repeat?

I must agree there were quite a lot of crowd scenes.
Hope the startline crew appreciated the shot of the grid girls

RampItUp has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!

Well I don't think the grid girls were quite that bad!

Okay, maybe I was expecting too much but that was seriously disappointing. Firstly what was it filmed on, someone's camcorder? The picture quality was really ropey, far below what I would call a professional production. The graphics could have been done on a ZX Spectrum. Secondly some of the opening shots were bizarre to say the least... dogs, spit-roast, huh? Why wasn't there crowd shots, or some short 'vox-pops' with a few punters to get the atmosphere going? Thirdly, whilst the racing footage was okay, the editing was confusing - too much cutting going on as if they didn't know which car to concentrate on. Fourthly, not enough interviews with drivers. A bit more information on the cars and specs would have been useful. Fifthly, why no footage of the presentations? It ended rather abruptly. Sixthly, the race commentary was so artificially over-enthusiastic it just annoyed rather than entertained.

I'm aware this a first attempt as such, but there is definitely much scope for improvement! It was an exciting and entertaining day at Lydden, but this failed whole-handedly to capture it.

You have to remember this is Men and Motors! If you're only paying £30 a shot for tv coverage you aren't going to get Gaby Yorath and Suzi Perry. So it ends up looking like it was put together on a camcorder and edited by a 14yo in his bedroom...!

Perhaps in future years the BRDA could get Sky involved and share the RSS Superseries slot? M and M is seriously tacky - do we really think a soft porn channel is the best way to promote the sport? Still its better than nothing I suppose...

A soft porn channel that has WRC footage!
At least there is a SLIM chance of rallycross getting on a terrestrial channel again, as Men and Motors is ITV. There are some good programmes on M+M so dont knock it, its just after 11pm when things get jiggy!!!

I have just watched the coverage, after reading some comments on hear I wonder if they have changed the programme, or are some people being a bit too fussy.
I was expecting to see loads of dogs there were two
I didn't find thew opening shots bizarre, they seemed to set the scene well, there were crowd shots, the paddock, the grid girls, a hog roast and a some guys enjoying a couple of beers also in the background some cars practicing. What more do you want.
There were four driver interviews plus one with the BRDA chairman John Horton. IMHO just the right ammount for a half hour programme.
The footage of the racing looked great, I had no problem with the way it was edited and the picture quality was fine on my TV.
The only thing I thought could be improved was, there should be some shots of the trophy presentation, and a couple of post race interviews.

Not a bad first show, little bit short of Supermod and stock hatch coverage, but i suppose this was to be expected with only half an hours worth of air time.

I defo feel they could make an hours worth of show from a weekends action.

Good to see rallycross back on the TV though

I thought it was good, we have to take into account the amount we pay for each classes coverage I suppose.
Back to the dogs...... thought dogs weren't allowed into a circuit!!

It was great to see the BRC back on television and more action in that half hour than in any of the first 5 grand prix of this season! Surely the only problem with it was that it was too short, and im sure the producer of the programme had great difficulty editing 6hrs of rallycrossing into 1/2 hour and i think they did a good job. Interviews are interesting but i would rather see track action and a common thought with rallying coverage is that you get too many interviews (could this be due to lack of exciting action??) and i think with this programme they got it right. Rallycoss showed it is a thrilling and dramatic sport and im sure it wont belong before the big production companies start to show interest.

My Concern Silver Bullet is dogs are not supposed to be at circuits And using them in this programme only makes it harder for other circuits to control people who bring their dogs to meetings. "Well I saw them on the telly, so you must be wrong" etc.

I know what you are saying but Lydden does have a clear policy which allows dogs as long as they are kept on a lead, not sure it should be encouraged though.

Lydden is unique in allowing dogs, it's part of what makes Lydden the friendly circuit that it is.

As for the coverage I thought it was very good indeed. I spoke to the producer at the weekend, and he tells me he could have filled a 1/2 programme with supermods alone, let alone everything else.

Also, I managed to get in the background of one shot!
