I made every effort not to be influenced by anyone by not accessing the prediction thread and sent my predictions in by PM. So, to my horror, albeit fortunately for this competition, when I checked the predictions after the thread was closed, I had the exact same prediction as eatapc. I'll do the same next race and post by PM, and will only access the prediction thread after it is closed. This is thet only way I can be fair and predict independantly of the other posters.

I have been thinking about this because many forummers go on holiday and cannot send in their predictions for whatever reason. So may I suggest to R that he makes the first prediction of the year for the Australian GP the default prediction for anyone who is unable to send in a prediction.
I say this in good faith, because I was extremely lucky to get to a PC when I was on a short holiday earlier this year.

I think that's a great idea Valve. I missed one race due to a computer failure and am still struggling to make it up. I run a similar game on another board, and will certainly suggest it there for next season. I told the members that at the end of the season, I would calculate all of their average scores based on the races they played and post the results which sort of accomplishes the same thing. Folks tend to drop out if they miss a race or two, and either of these ideas should keep up their interest.

I hear what you're saying, but I'm not sure how this could be done in a manner which is both practical and fair.

I definitely agree that it's a shame if someone who has participated through every round should miss out just because they forgot or didn't have the opportunity to post their predictions just on one occasion.

On the other hand, I'd hate to see someone who happened to make great predictions for Melbourne, and then didn't post another prediction all year, end up winning the damn thing. That would go against the spirit of the competition.

Another thing is that the software doesn't handle "default predictions" for the time being - I have to submit the predictions for each member in each round. I have to emphasize that each and every one of you can send me your predictions several rounds ahead if you don't think you'll be able to post them when the actual thread is running. If you're able to get to a computer anyway during the week leading up to a Grand Prix, you can always change your pre-submitted predictions - at any point up to the deadline. So I think this leaves a lot of room for avoiding being "caught out", at least during a holiday, though it doesn't help if you have an unexpected computer problem, like Maxmil experienced.

I'm taking the suggestion on board and will consider whether or not this can be solved in a practical manner for next year - at the moment I don't see how, simply because I can't see how this can be done without involving too much manual work. It'll have to be automated - at least to a high degree - if it's at all to be considered.

All very good points R. Another approach would be to discard players' lowest two or three scores. This would allow for a couple of "forgets" and/or computer crashes. Don't start up something that will be a burden for you though.

R, how about this - anyone who forgets to send in a prediction gets cars 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 as their default prediction, with car 2 being their pole choice. This is as arbitrary as it can be and it will still help any fellow forgetting to submit his entry with a default entry. What do you think? I mean that would be fairly simple for you to enter.

Facco and Valve,

There is no problem adapting the software to accept default predicitons, which should be the last one the person made, to cover all possibilities.

But it wouldn't be fair. To post or send the prediction is part of the competition.
You can't win a race if you don't run it !

Or we could just keep the current rules that punish those who forget. That seems the fairest thing to me. If you are going away, just PM your choices to R - like many have done.

Sorry, but if you forget to put in your choices, its noone's fault but your own.

We've discussed this in staff, and we've agreed to keep the format of submitting predictions the way it is. Though I sympathize with anyone who is unable to post predictions due to a technical mishap, this occurrence surely is the exception rather than the rule. It must be underlined that you at any time can send me your predictions in advance if you know you're going away or if you're experiencing problems - this summer, for example, someone predicted as much as 5 races ahead when they were going away.

This decision is also made with the intention of rewarding those who make an effort to participate in every round, and it's not fair to give the same opportunity to someone who for example only have posted predictions for half of the rounds. Though we appreciate the good intentions behind the suggestions, we've come to the conclusion that our current procedure is the fairest manner in which to run the competition.
