Buy or Lease an engine?
I was just reading Racecar Engineering and in it AER says the V8 P1 engine is only available for lease due to the technology involved, is this the case for all the top customer engines?
What happens when the car is eventually sold on as a museum piece or for historic racing, would AER release the engine with the car, afterall even the heavily controlled Audi R8 is now in private hands, competing in historic racing, complete with Audi V8. |

I'd imagine not, the car will be sold sans engine. The new owner would have to modify it or talk nicely to AER! Of course by the time this happens the situation may have changed.

I think it will just be a passage of time. AER are probably still developing the engine and would make changes at every rebuild.
I bet you could buy the older 4 cylinder motor outright from AER. I would also imagine you could get the 4 litre Judd outright and maybe even the 3.4 litre unit. Otherwise they would just gather dust. |

I think AER leasing their engines is nothing unusual..........to my knowledge, this is also how Judd operate their sports car engine units too.

Think it ensures engines come back for rebuild on time and only to the engine builder... u lease your Enduro engine as $$$ per X hours.... (Bloomin' expensive way to do it too so I imagine it's so they can make the most $$ possible... no-one tries to squeeze a few extra hours out of the engine etc...
Slightly off topic... I was told at the weekend that after each race, you have to pay Porsche $120,000 to just check over the engine in your LMP2 Spyder! Now THAT is expensive if it's correct (and was a good source...) |
