Halfway down you can see a picture of the Nationwide CoT concept. It will have the same 110" wheelbase as the Sprint Cup car but with a spoiler instead of a rear wing.

It set to be introduced halfway through next year at the intermediate ovals, scheduled fulltiome for 2010.

So I guess that's a dead end for the pony car wars in the Nationwide series? Could been a good change between Cup and Nationwide a limit to the effectiveness of Cup regulars stepping down for the Sat race.

The problem is that if they did that then the cars would be too different to the Sprint Cup Car, and thus wouldn't be as effective in bringing talent through.

There are benefits to having Cup regulars in the Nationwide race, more people watch it, bringing in more sponsorship. It also allows the newer drivers to race against experienced Cup drivers and learn from them while racing; thats a opportunity that simply doesn't exist in any other form of motorsport.

If more Cup drivers want to race in Nationwide next year wouldn't that make it harder for rookies to get a seat as all teams would much rather an experienced popular driver compared to an unknown rookie who may crash alot???

Plus the viewers aren't coming in with the Cup drivers running down there and at some tracks you have to buy the Nationwide ticket to get the Cup seat as well just to prop up the series dates. The current system isn't working since most of the top points guys are Cup drivers not rising Nationwide drivers so it's not really a feeder series anymore.

Joe Balash on the Nationwide CoT:

Quote:
“We are working very hard on the COT,” [Nationwide Series Director Joe] Balash explains. “We’ll utilize the NASCAR 110-inch wheelbase certified chassis, and it will be interchangeable between the Sprint Cup and Nationwide garages. [But] we’re going to do something unique with the bodies to give the Series its own look as opposed to the past.” The last point is a reminder of the dangers posed by creating a Nationwide car too much like their Sprint Cup cousins; and when you talk to Balash, you sense his focus at ensuring the next generation of Nationwide vehicles create a unique driving style all their own. “We want [the new car] to drive somewhere between a Truck and Cup car,” he says. “And we’ve been working with drag and downforce to be somewhere in between. We want the car to drive a little easier than a Sprint Cup car; [and while] there are some components of the body that are the same, we’ve relocated them. For example, we’ve moved the rear deck lid forward, and the same distance we moved it forward, we’ve moved the front of the body forward, helping the car turn just a little bit better in the corner. It’s been great to see from concept to the car in the wind tunnel.” When that concept becomes reality, the timeframe is still very much TBD. “My hope is to introduce the new car next year,” says the series director. “We’re looking at an August timeframe based on the conversations we’ve had with owners and others in the garage.”
Interesting that they are trying to make it handle differently to the Cup car and look a bit different.

i don't see why they wouldn't entertain V6's even if they are huge or higher revvers.....
or allow for DOHC V6 they can make it make at least 500 hp
ofcourse as CUP cars now push 750-850 hp depending on the source (roush-yates dyno'd the car at 753hp at the wheels!) with a 15% drive train loss you'd be looking at 865 hp last year!
these would be some crazy V6's

True, plus V6s would add to engine development costs. Why develop a completely new engine when you can use a detuned version of the Cup engine?

Its smart move that they're planning to use the Cup car's 110" tube frame and only having detuned engines and different bodies to change the handling. Should give the series a more distinct identity.

They've already used V6's in what was then Busch competition. They sounded like a field of rabid hornets.

The main problem with Nationwide atm, imho, is the OTT Cup driver component. This simply has to be drastically limited for the overall good.

If the Nationwide is to go the CoT route, then they should endevour to make it a reasonable whack different as far as I am concerned - what is the point otherwise?

V6s were cool...i still miss my 1986 4.3 L V6 Monte Carlo LS; what i smooth ride! but the V6s (as cool as they WERE) would be considered silly being the only top flight stockcar series with them.

and are the trucks not VERY different from NW and Cup cars? and there isn't much problem for people jumping in and out of them.

Detroit has messed up by putting Camaros, Challengers and Mustangs in the NW series....BRING BACK THE TRANS AM SERIES!

Only Toyota has confirmed that they'll be using the Camry nameplate with the Nationwide CoT, with regard to the others nothing has been formally announced.

No from what I heard at the moment that is not on the cards and that the car will be a Nationwide oriented COT and everyone will have the same body work. The pony car idea is toast.

the V6's of old sounded great shifting and revving but droning at 200mph for 3 hours must be awful
i like the sound sounds very purposeful and racey
V6's were even used in the old Goody's DASH series of the US southEast... toyota was heavuly involved there and of course they won lots, but those did not sound as good as the Busch or Trans-Am V6's
