Sue Whitlock

I hope Chris doesn't mind me doing this, but I know the Whitlocks never did 10/10ths.

God bless Sue and her brave battle over recent years. I can now imagine her organising everything upstairs. George Copeland will have something to explain, I'm sure!

I'm just glad that Chris & Sue knew they'd got that award in good time.

Sue is still my inspiration as I fight my own battles. What better inspiration could you ask for?

RIP Sue, you will be missed.

That's very very sad news. I'd known both Chris and Sue for years and, of course, was aware of her health problems - Chris must be devastated.
RIP Sue

So sorry to hear this. Flagged with Sue a number of times over the years. She was always good company even when clearly unwell. She fought hard for a long time and the news was a surprise.
May Sue's next life treat her more kindly. Thoughts are with Chris.

I was only talking to Chris on the GP bus yesterday - very sad news. Thank you Sue for all your hard work and support of UK marshals - I hope to see you again at that great motor racing event where all our colleagues and drivers go

Thoughts are with Chris and the rest of the family at this sad time

When marshals such as Sue have served the sport for so long there will be a large number of colleagues left behind that are filled with sadness but also with memories of happy times together.
RIP Sue.
We will all be thinking of you Chris during this difficult time.

If you wondered why I was crying on Post yesterday morning, now you know why.
I knew Sue for the best part of 30 years and she really was a lovely level headed lady with a great sense of humour.
Rest in Peace.

Shelagh,

As you rightly say, Sue Whitlock was an inspiration to all of us in how bravely she faced up to several different strains of this evil disease over a period of eight or nine years. Several times the prognosis was not good but Sue fought back to prove the medics wrong. Sadly, this last time she lost out.

What is perhaps not so well known is how big a part Sue (and Chris!) played in running the Club’s finances and administration. Sue took on the job of Bookkeeper and made that her very own. She took on Membership, too, when that was centralised but had to give that up three or four years ago during one of her periods of more serious illness. However, she kept a watching brief on all aspects of Club admin, had a wonderful memory for what had been dealt with and what had not – keeping us all on our toes!

Knowing since last autumn that she was not coping so well with this vile disease, she gave advance warning that we needed to find a new Bookkeeper. Of course, this was just as we got into the new membership year (which starts, in effect, on 1st October) plus end of year accounting, etc. Sue (and Chris) put in an enormous amount of hours setting up for this change. Ironically, the final handover was planned to be on 1st July 2013, the day after Sue’s sad demise.

We are going to seriously miss the contribution Sue (and Chris) made to keep the Club’s general admin in good shape. I always add “(and Chris)” because of the quiet but significant help he offered in the background. The first quarter of each new year is very, very busy. No one complained, no one moaned, Sue and Chris just got on with things but I would notice the changed hand-writing on cheques, etc as Chris stepped in to help.

Clubs like ours exist only by the efforts of volunteers like Chris and Sue Whitlock. Sue will be sadly missed on Club affairs but not nearly so much as by Chris. Our thoughts are with him.

George,

That was lovely. As you say, Sue was always there in the background beavering away and making things happen - a thankless but necessary task at the best of times. And Chris was also there and we must not forget all his input, support etc. You know what they say, behind every great woman there is a supportive man!

I'm really glad I did this thread now, if only to print it out for Chris at some point, so he knows (as if he didn't) how much we, the marshalling community, care for him and appreciate Sue.

Thank you, George.

Such sad news. My only contact with Sue was in writing regarding membership (I forget why now) and she couldn't have been more helpful. I do know she put in an enormous amount of work on behalf of us all and I hope she knew how grateful we all have been.

RIP, Sue, and sincere condolences to her family and all of those who were close to her.

I don't really know what to say. Sue and I communicated about membership and she was the most helpful and friendly person with a lovely sense of humour.

Grant and I are very very saddened to hear this news and our thoughts and sympathies go out to Chris and all the family, who I'm sure are heartbroken.

Thanks Sue for everything you did for us and I'm sorry we never got to meet.

RIP Sue, a true loss to marshalling and the BMMC.

Sue was also a leading figure in the fight with the "blazer and tie" hierarchy in getting lady marshals onto the bank. Look how successful she and her fellow ladies have got in that battle.

Farewell Sue and heartfelt condolences to Chris.
