Schumacher Takes Pole from Barrichello in Spain
Well, I thought Rubens had it clear for his first Dry Session Pole, but MSchumacher takes the Pole in his last run.

Montoya puts a good time in right at the end of the session, I thought he was exiled to the mid-pack, and Button does well to pip Coulthard for 6th.
Yoong makes it in, (Barely) |

Rubens should be very proud , he is pushing MS hard and Michael knows it .
Drive of the day goes to Jenson i think . |

Does anybody else feel that TGF is just trying to make it a bit more exciting?
Or is he just playing with Rubens? It must be disheartening for him. |

Agree with you there Sato San, Rubens has been transformed by the F2002 and if he drives like he did in San Marino then Michael is going to have to up his game!
Lets hope we havent already seen the best of this weekend though. |

Amazing where many of the drivers seemed to get it all right at the end. TGF, Montoya and Trulli to name a few. Made for an exciting end to the qualifying but we didn't really get to see much of it on ITV.
If all goes according to plan I think 1st and 2nd wll be a forgone conclusion but the rest of the pack should have a nicr battle for the remaining points positions. Button is impressing. Last edited by Cougar21; 27 Apr 2002 at 12:25. |

I think the drive of the day goes to Frentzen. Oh yeah, anyone seen the guy that replaced him in that yellow team? Whats his name again? Lets look down the list. Way down the list... oh there we go 19th. By the way this is a track that he knows. I dont want to bash him but ahh, what are we waiting for? Lets go!!

Well, from a McLaren fan, not a lot to be excited about really - I am not a Ferrari fan, hell no, but I must congratulate them, they are the class of the field. Hopefully the scales will even up later on in the year and Williams might be able to claw back into the title race when we get some hot weather.
Good Michael Schumacher - As always Rubens Barrichello - Doing his best Kimi Raikkon - Outshines his team mate again Jensen Button - Beats Coulthard outright Heinz-Harold Frentzen - Great effort in the Arrows Mark Webber - Almost two seconds ahead of Yoong... Bad Takuma Sato - I am lost for words David Coulthard - No title this year, DC. There is always 2004 Toyota - Spain doesn't suit the car too well Jaguar - Second best driver in the world 15th, Pedro 17th Honda - Four cars, and they are ALL in the bottom half |

Some awfully disappointing results there. Sato? Jacques? And both Arrows ahead of the Jags!
Well done Jenson, won't Liz be proud. |

My man Heidfeld once again in the top 10, and outdoes that young fellow from Brazil once again
JPM certainly left his final run until very late, and was lucky to get a free track. And I thought Trulli was gone until he popped up in 9th. I really felt for Rubens when TGF stole his pole position once again. Don't worry RB, it will come one day. And it looks like the Arrows pace in practice wasn't a false dawn. HHF was generally competitive throughout qualifying, and Bernoldi should also be happy with his position. |

There is talk that Michael was using Rubens' setup on his last lap. Can anyone verify that from watching the press conference or elsewhere?

Gotta feel sorry for Rubens. But, to his credit, he is absolutely driving the wheels off of that Ferrari and it's paying off.
And Ralf, again, is where he rightfully belongs, ahead of his team-mate. What's happening to DC?. |

How on earth can MSch improve his performance by using Rubens' setup? Maybe he pinched Rubens' tyres!

Ahhh, a Ferrari front row is good but not quite unexpected. But a second faster than the rest of the grid..... .

That was one good qualifying session, even if nothing major happened for the first 20 minutes or so. I do feel for Barrichello though, he was truly on it in that session, comfortably outpacing Schumacher until 5 minutes before the end of the seesion.
The other notable performance for me was from Kimi Raikkonen. I have always been a big Raikkonen fan since he made his debut in Australia last year and he is showing that he more than deserves his McLaren seat. That is now two Grand Prix's in a row where he has outpaced the far more experienced Coulthard and he has now outqualified Coulthard 3 times in the 5 Grand Prix's so far this year. Also, strangely, Raikkonen has qualified 5th for all 5 races this year, how's that for consistency !!!! Button also put in another good session and he really has Trulli on the racks at the moment. Trulli in fact was in 20th place a couple of minutes before the session ended, but luckily for him he saved his blushes with 9th place. Heidfeld will feel disapointed with 8th place as I'm sure he could have been a couple of places higher, but Frentzen should be very happy with 10th place, the Arrows is working very well around Barcelona despite the fact that they haven't tested as much as the other teams, especially at the Barcelona circuit itself. As for the rest, Jordan, BAR and Jaguar are still struggling and face an uphill battle if they are to score a point or two this weekend. Some consolation for them is that Toyota appears to have gone off the rails after their brilliant first 3 Grand Prix's. McNish was really luckly not to hit the wall hard after his spin coming out of the penultimate corner. And finally Minardi. Webber easily outpacing Yoong as usual, but Yoong did only complete 7 laps due to his Front Wing failure. From the replays I saw, the wing shouldn't have come off that easily, but luckily Webber and Yoong emerged unhurt from there incidents which could have been quite nasty with the front of the car being launched into the air. We are all set for hopefully a good race, please let it not be as dull as Imola, Please !!!!! |

Schumi: Stop screwing with people, just shut up and drive the car.
Reubens: Can this guy _ever_ catch a break? JPM: Practice, practice, practice! If the setup and tires are that bad, you've got to give the engineers something to work with. You need to at least outrace Ralph. Button: Good on ya!!! Frentzen: Wow! I mean, like.... Wow!!! Jacques: C'mon man, it's make or break... You're racing for your career this year! Miko Salo: Is it just me or is he getting slower every race? Is it the car? They were upper mid-pack at the start. Sato, Yoong: Get out of the cars! No I mean it, out! That's it, you're done! There are drivers who could actually do something with those cars besides scraping dog out of the gravel traps! And take Lauda with you! Smilies are fun for ranting! Oh, well, yeah, that does change things about for Juan.
It's not what Schumi's said to the press, but inside the paddock: "Gimme his car! I'm the World Champion! I want his car! Gimme gimme gimme!" Last edited by Lee Janotta; 27 Apr 2002 at 14:16. |
