Technical F1 Question
Hey there everyone,
Would anyone have a clue where we could view technical progress of F1, eg..like the drawing you see by that Piola guy in the F1 Magazine articles? I love to read about this type of progress in F1 but I have failed to find any sites that have this info that are up to date.... Regards The Wog !!! :-) |

The Atlas F1 Technical forum is very good. There's a thread on there right now with scans of Piola drawings and interesting comments to go with.

Well Wogboy, it's just a matter of time that information like that will be available more broadly. People like Piola have been present throughout motoring - if any - history. Documenting anything from blue prints through chassis numbers to the teething adjustments at the smallest of motorracing events. Like his predecessors Piola was present at races with his sketchbook and did the reasearch and sketching himself. Unlike his predecessors he doesn't wait to finish an encyclopaedia on a particular marque or era, but provides briefings per Grand Prix in paid editorials or internet magazines. At the end of the season this culminates in a Technical Review which is really worthy of purchasing. A good one to look for next to Piola (which is hardly to not published freely) is Craig 'Scarbs' Scarborough (see TechnicalF1.com for his free work) who went - understandably - for paid publacations last year (you probably know him when you have a AtlasF1 subscription). Good accurate work.
But time is catching up with Piola's sketchbook and it's exclusive drawings. In this information age and the graphical possibilities of internet presentations like that are highly appreciated so publications will try to obtain them, ultimately by making their own. That this will greatly reduce quality both in information as in display is evident, but nonetheless it's more than nothing, which is what the non-subscribed F1-nut can find. Example: the F1 website of the Italian sportspaper Gazzeto dellos Sport features nice animations of aero packages etc. Worth checking, although accuracy remains hard to verify. Not that it's much help but if you're ever in England in july, go to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, it's a historic event, but there are F1 cars there, and you won't get any closer to F1 cars anywhere else.
The whole thing is run in Lord March's country estate, and cars of all eras run up the hill which is Lord March's driveway. Some are timed, but most are demos. Their are a whole host of drivers and team owner rubbing shoulders with the public. I bumbed into Jean Alesi one year, and saw people like Damon Hill, Stirling Moss, Alan Jones, Chris Amon, John Surtees, David Couthard, J P Montoya, Ralf Schumacher, and a whole host of others. |
