Glad to see Bowe redress with Brock after the accidental punt at the final turn.
Excellent day of racing- one of the best race days I've had. |

Yeah, it was a great day of racing. Congrats to James "Jimmy Thruster" Brock for his three race wins in the Brutes series. Some of the best action I've seen for a long time.
P.S. The on-track commentaters for the Brutes are fantastic. They should call the V8s on channel Ten. Quote of the day: Commentater: "So, how was your race?" V8 Brute Driver: "Yeah good until I dropped my Smoke!" |

Weren't the Brutes meant to have had a 500km race at QR?

An interesting event that occurred on Sunday was where Peter went out for a few laps in the Mobil VL that was part of the Bowden collection on display near the pit area.
The car was the orignal Bathurst winner from 1987, restored back to proper VL specs (from a Beaurepairs Walkinshaw scheme) by Peter Angus in Melbourne; and recently aquired by the Bowdens. |

Not sure why it had VK tailight lenses instead of actual VL ones.

You will probably find it had a VK dash as well. Car was formally VK #05 transformed into VL #10 while VL #05 was a brand new ground up build VL. #10 debuted at Oran Park enduro.

Ahh, that would explain it then.
But if it is VK 05, is that the MHDT VK 05, last big banger, which is in the Bathurst Hall of Fame? |

The Bowden car was the original VL built in 1987 and debuted at the Surfers round of the ATCC. It was then sent across to SPA and ran as the number 3 entry there until 2am, when it holded a piston. In the Bowden car, the orignal SPA wiring harness used to run the extra driving lights and the heater remains in place. Yes they are VL tail lights, just not colour coded in the original fashion.
A new VL was built by the HDT as the 05 car, and that had the complex negative camber rear end. It debuted I think at Amaroo Park for the first endurance race in 87, and was joined by a VK converted to VL Mobil specs for the Pepsi 250 at Oran Park. The 'converted' VL was #6, and driven by Neil Crompton and John Crooke. This was presumably done to provide a 'two car team presence' to the Oran Park race, whilst the original VL was en route from SPA. Gary Scott wrote off the last VK 05 at Lakeside in 1987. At the end of the day, and indeed the end of 1987, there were three Mobil VL's lined up in the Bertie Street HDT showroom, all for sale. The one you see here is the first one built, and the one that won bathurst in 1987. Make no mistake, it's the real deal. Last edited by MHDT; 18 Jun 2003 at 03:20. |

Off topic; as i was driving out of Nambour this morning, sitting outside a truck yard was the ex Alan Moffat International transporter that used to carry the Mustang around. Not signwritten with Coke colours but Alan Moffat Racing. I remember seeing it many years ago. I'm guessing David Bowden must own it.

Pete, you are correct, that is the original Moffat racemobile GT, now owned by Bowden.

I wanted to look at collection and although i know where he lives i have been told he won't let you look at them there. I have tried to contact him through Jeff Barnes but that hasn't been sucessful either. He seems like a private sort of person and does not have a listed number.

Pete55,
They rotate their collection, mostly within Queensland. A Norm Beechy GTHO (yes a Ford!) is on display at DJR HQ, and other cars are shuffled in and out of the Holden Motorsport museum, located at the performance driving centre at Norwell. Some useful links: 1. To the Bowden collection: http://www.fouronthefloor.com.au/ 2. To the Holden Performance Driving centre / museum: http://www.performancedriving.com.au/pdcsrc/home.htm |

I think good on him- David Bowden is doing a great service for us all obtaining these significant and valuable cars in our country's history. Thet are too significant to leave them sitting in a shed or museum all the time. One day, children will ask who was peter Brock, Alan Moffat, Dick Johnson etc. They will be able to see these cars running around and the legends will continue on as they should. Personally, I believe that at every major meeting, V8SC, procar whatever, there should be a demonstration run of significant cars during breaks in the racing.

I think he is doing a fabulous job of collecting worthwhile cars. I just think it would be nice for a museum to be built to hold them all for public display. The fact that these cars do go to race meets and some also race in historic races is great to see.

Group C is a 5th category class and from the beginning of next year Group A will be as well. Heaps of these machines, in there original livery, are starting to appear from out of the woodwork. Within a few years there will be a possibility of standalone meetings for Historic Touring cars. For mine the tourers (Appendix J and Group C)seem to be the major attraction on the track at a historic meets. Regularities just dont seem to excite the viewing croud. There are some fantastic cars to see in the paddock however. As for Bowden, the guy must be a LEGEND!! I would love to have a collection of this sort. The guy who restored the International Transporter didnt initially want to sell it but Bowden offered the right price, cos he had to have it!!! |

Yeah, I have been to a few historic meetings over the years and have enjoyed the Group C cars. There needs to be more of them though should happen soon. I can't wait for the Group A cars to appear- I would love to see the GTR and RS500 out there again.

The problem is that cams will only let cars race which have raced in the group c/a era which is real bummer
