NASN a new sports channel on Sky Digital channel 420 have recently announced they have secured the rights to show the Winston cup this season and that almost all the races will be shown live in primetime including the Daytona 500. Unfortunately its a subscription channel and you will have to folk out £9.99 a month to see it.

Eurosport have had the live rights "on offer" for three years, so it would seem to me that NASN have just bought it from them.
Anyway I've looked ahead on the Eurosport TV listings and for the night of the 500 they have the Bud Shootout listed and the 500 the following Sunday, the usual **** 1 Hour highlighs program. Looks like my credit card will take a battering this year |

I can see Eurosport's argument for not bring most races live - they are probably too long to fit into the schedules when they've other sports (not that it stops the tennis, but it's a legitamate excuse). Still can't see why they can't bring the Bud Shootout though - just as a teaser.
Ian> does NASN broadcast throughout Europe or jsut the UK? If it's jsut UK then Eurosport potentially still 'have' the rights (not that they'll use them, but I live in hope) |

I'm not going to signup until I see something official, yes an email saying they have the rights is one thing, but until I actually see it in their schedule, I'l hold back, just in case Fox Sports Europe decide to show it foc (I watched all but 5 of the Busch live on FSE last year).
@ASP no, NASN is only in the UK, primary audience target is American Forces or American's living here that aren't in the forces and the olld US Sports fan... The Channel is owned by an Irish company, but basically everything from transmission to subscriptions is subcontracted to Sky. Eurosports rights end at the end of 2003, so maybe someone else will take it up next year, my biggest gripe with Eurosport is they could, in the UK at least, if they wanted to, use Eurosport News to transmit the races either as part of the sub, or PPV, I'm sure there won't be too many complaints if they take their "repeated every 15 minutes" **** news service off the air for a few hours each Sunday Last edited by Ian-S; 21 Jan 2003 at 23:15. |

I'd say that NASN paid Eurosport to show the races live in the UK< Euroflop still hold the european TV rights!

Just checked the NASN website www.nasn.com and they have posted a new section about their NASCAR coverage. Looks like they will showing highlights of the Bud shootouts but the Gatorade 125s and the Daytona 500 will both be live.

Thanks for the info chaps.
Just saw a clip of NASCAR on the NASN freeview and thought I'd check it out. When the time comes, I'll probably subscribe to this channel too. I've been itching to get some decent Winston Cup action back ever since SS dropped it 2/3 years ago... |

Could well be them overhyping their NBS coverage - they do tend to do that. And it'll still probably be 45 minute highlights of it.
Still worth keeping an eye on it though, of course! |

4 What its worth
According to NASN's website at http://www.nasn.com. The North American Sports Network's coverage of the Bud Shootout at 6pm on Sunday February 9th will be one of the channels "Freeview" programmes. This means that if you have a valid Sky subscription you will be able to see the coverage for free and sample NASN's NASCAR coverage! |
