Guess What? Mario Andretti to test Indy.....
Mario is going to test TK car and then maybe Qual. it for him. What do you guys think about this? I think it's great. Looks like another negative for Cart and another plus for the IRL. Now i guess it's time to bash Mario too.

Two thoughts:
1. What happened to Mario's boycott of IRL events? Him driving brings undue attention and validation in the IRL vs. CART debate. 2. It would be absolutely amazing if he could post some competitive times. What ever happened to that Legends series they were talking about?? Mario and other vintage aces were suppose to race in Shelby Cobras or something? Last edited by Snrub; 23 Apr 2003 at 02:53. |

What do I think about this AGRfan? I think it's hilarious that the IRL has to hire a 60+ year old man to drive one of their cars. I also find it funny that the IRL can't produce a legitamite race car driver of their own, so they always come calling on CART for help. I have a question for you. What's up with the IRL car's chassis? I don't no if they (IRL) are living in the past, but those cars sure are. This is 2003...not 1973 or 1983. I can't even begin to describe how ugly those front end noses look like. The front and back wings are larger then a Boeing 747's. Don't tell me...now the IRL is after CART's race car designers and engineers. I DON'T BLAME THEM.

Too funny when you read this:

I think people are making too big of deal for this. I mean, Mario is Michael's son. Michael asked him if he could help and Mario naturally said yes. Indy is Indy. Every year since Cart drivers have started coming back to Indy they've won, so I don't think having a 60 year old retired one, albeit arguably the greatest of all time come back for a few laps to test is such a big deal.

Dov, the IRL and TG don't hire drivers. Teams hire drivers. Drivers bring sponsors to teams to get seats. Same with CART. Pook shelled out $8-plus million extra to Newman-Haas, Patrick and Walker for this season. CART needs American drivers in the series. Pook did not "dictate" a single driver to any one of those teams even though he gave 'em a ton of bucks. The idea the IRL -- or CART "hires drivers" is inaccurate and incorrect.

Is this story really true? I suppose the plan is that Mario qualifies the car for Kanaan, who then races when he's recovered. But wouldn't you hire an out-of-work CART or IRL driver to do that, not a sexagenarian, even if he is your dad? |

From the last link:
"Kanaan, who suffered a broken left arm earlier this month in Japan, might not be able to practice May 4 or later qualify for the Indy 500. Dr. Terry Trammell did say Tuesday that Kanaan should be well enough to run the race May 25. The Andrettis already have agreed to Mario qualifying the car for Kanaan if Kanaan is unable to." I hope he gets to qualify. Should be very interesting. Does it not strike you as odd that they would leave Kanaan's qualifying up to Mario? You'd think that with all the money Honda is spending they would bring in a ringer to ensure a top spot. No offense to Mario, but I'm not sure he's going to secure a top spot if it comes to that. (yes I realize about Lemans) About the crashing: Mario would likely have greater consequences from a crash then Franchetti, Kanaan, De Faren... Last edited by Snrub; 23 Apr 2003 at 19:22. |

This is shear stupidity! The man is almost a senior citizen for goodness sake! I don't care if he thinks he is a "Gordie Howe version of Fangio" even a light shunt in one of those tin cans against concrete would snap those old bones like pretezels!! Don't do it! You can't love Mikey that much!!

Too true, although I read on the IRL forum that Mario wrecked the car, running over bits and pieces from a Brack crash
