Prost rumour from way back
Now, I may be going entirely mad (it's an idea that has been floated before), but does anyone remember rumours that Ferrari were trying to tempt Alain Prost back in either 1995 or 1996? I think it was the latter, with the intention that he'd partner Schuey. I know Prost tested for Ligier after his retirement from Williams (1994, maybe?) but decided not to come back with them, but does anyone else recall the Ferrari rumour?

He also tested for McLaren too. I think his test for Ligier started all the Prost to buy Ligier stories, although it took some time to come to be.
I do remember something vaguely about Ferrari, but only vaguely. |

Wouldn't it have been a comeback, though? Oh, I'd have paid good money to see Prost and Schumacher head to head at the Scuderia in 1996.

Uhn... That would be great, but the professor was close to retirement, so I think he would be easily beaten.

Prost tested for McLaren occasionally in 1995 and 1996. I think it was Bernie who wanted Prost at Ferrari alongside TGF for 1996 - what an interesting season that would have been....

Above all, it would have been good to see Prost on the track instead of doing disasters from the pitwall

I think ITV quoted TGF last year that it was a very real possibility at the time. I'm not going to find it for you though!

Beaten, perhaps, I'm not so sure about the easily. I don't think TGF would have got everything quite so much his own way..... |

Ok, Aysie... Not so easily perhaps, but thinking how Senna was disturbed, seeing in the young TGF himself many years back...

The only partneship i recall for Ferrari '96 was Michael and Gerhard, but Berger knew that he would be asked to play no 2 and declined.

The ironic thing is I recall Prost saying that "he'd never drive an F1 car again" just after Senna's death. Well, goes to prove he loved driving...

Prost retired rather than drive another season with the biggest egomaniac (besides himself) in Formula One. Why would he decide to drive with another big egomaniac who would have demoted him to No. 2, in an uncompetitive car?
IMO this is another one of those wishful thinking stories like Jacques driving for Ferrari. (Perhaps the thought of Jacques driving for Ferrari once TGF retires is what keeps TGF from retiring!) |

Can anyone provide a specific quote that would prove that was what Prost was thinking? Maybe Prost quit because he had decided it was time to do so. Maybe if he had known that 7 years later he would be fueling yet another "# 2 Ferrari Driver Contract Conspiracy Thread" he would have come back.

I had a quick look at some Autospurts from the time and the only reference I can see is about Prost driving for Mclaren, and then as a test driver. Nothing about a race seat with Ferrari - and given his previous when they sacked him in 91 for calling the car a truck I doubt it too! Altho he would have showed that goiman fokker a thing or two I am sure, if he could teach Senna in his prime he would have wiped the floor with his supposed Ferrari team-mate.

It would have been great to see Prost in Ferrari for '96. Just think of the fun at the Spanish Grand Prix: "Ooh, it's raining a bit, I think I'll just chicken out and pull into the pits for a nice retirement whilst completely disregarding my employers and collecting my lovely wage packet on the way. Ooh, I need to put my feet in a nice warm foot-spa. Ooh, that's better."

Think of TGF trying to perform the Schumacher Chop on someone who had been chopped by Senna! Think of TGF looking at the tire wall and wondering what happened to him ...
