Mattracer should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
911

Always have had a thing for the 911, you know, the "classic" 911 from the late '70s to mid '80s. The 911 SC particularly without the Turbo whale tail, the 2.7-3.0 litre.

Any tips for young players? Is it still a classic worth the money and effort for a 20 year old car?

Somewhere out there is VRO 492 W in a fab pale blue & no whale tale - 50000 very happy miles - there was a spec boost in about 1980 and then after about 1984 they stopped saying 911 on the boot (no fun !) but the fog lights front and rear were built in - get yourself a local specialist - have it inspected independently - join the club - usual advice - about £ 10000 maybe ?

Of course what you really need to do is buy a race prepared SC (with the whale tail) and race it in the Porsche Club GB Club Cup!

I'm also a keen 911 fan - though I have to admit that I'm not a purist in the classic sense, my ideal 911 would be a 2004 996 GT3!

Forgetting the racing side of things, as far as road going classic 911s are concerned I think I prefer the original lines of the earlier 1970s cars to the 80s SC's and Carreras. 1973 911E anyone? And although recent 993s and 996s seem to be ten a penny round my way, a really nice classic 911 is still a proper head turner.

Definitely join the club - it's half full of pretentious ******s but the rest are fine, and even if you don't intend racing, go to a few Club Championship meetings - it's the best place to meet enthusiasts who really know their way round their cars... (and let me know - I might turn up myself!)

Check out the stock list at Talacrest (http://www.racecar.co.uk/talacrest/) - it's round the corner from where I'm staying for the next 2 weeks. Verrry nice! The Porsche is possibly a little over your budget though

I'm suprised how few 911 fans are out there - I guess you need another site - pistonheads perhaps >

Best bet, is get along to your local Porsche Club meeting and have a chat with the members; you do not need to join the club.

Buy a car with full history, get it checked by an independent source and don't worry too much about mileage. Servicing costs are reasonable for such a performance motor and classic car insurance helps to keep the costs down.
