Just got hold of the Autosport GP review of 2000, lots of good stuff in it as usual. not sure its worth £6.00 though....

In one article they list some top 5's

Damon Hill picked his top 5 drivers, Ken Tyrrell, his top 5 teams and Murray, his top 5 Moments from the last season.

Damons drivers are.
1. Jenson Button
2. Michael Schumacher
3. Mika Hakkinen.
4. Jarno Trulli.
5. Jaques Villenueve.

He acknowledges that Michael and Mika are the two best, but he says that Jenson has come through so much in his debut year, ie. The Hype, Learning all new tracks, being dropped by your team etc etc. And he has taken in it all in his stride.

Tyrell's 5 teams are
1. McLaren
2. Ferrari
3. Williams
4. Arrows
5. BAR

He did however perform what I believe was known as a Froth Job, saying that McLaren were let down by reliability and poor strategy. Ferrari were pathetic for having spent so many millions and still taking 21 years to win the title.
He liked Williams and Arrows but wondered whether they had made the right choices for next year. Then he took a swipe at BAR saying the most valuable thing they brought from Him was 120 experienced people, yet they let them all go and wasted a season (1999) as a result.

Ken Tyrrel made some good choices. Damon is mad - but of course he would pick Bunsen as the Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread - Bunsen is his heir.

As for Murray's Top 10, he has picked virtually all the exciting things that actually happened over the season! However, I would have left out "Ferrari's Sensational Season" and put in that McLaren wingnut who promenaded the verge and had a significant influence on the outcome of the race thereby ... and the Monza Pileup, especially since it led to the death of a Marshall and the near-death of at least two of the pilots.... which would rank higher in my view than DC giving Michael the Flying Fickle Finger of Fate.

i would put it this way, those who desrves, Jenson Button, Jarno Trulli, Rubens Barichello, DC, Ralf Schumacher, JV. but none of them put up a really consistent performance though Jenson Button did bring a string of brilliant qualifying performances towards the end of the year


top 5 team:
1. FERRARI- their fantastic damage limitation exercise, and the way they could get around the overheating tyres. When Ferrari can't win, they did everything they could to get the highest possible position. Look at Schumi in Barcelona, he fought like hell to defend his position. Brilliant strategies by Ferrari and their ability to do everything right kept MS ahead of DC in Hungarory when the Ferrari is visually slower.

2. McLAren- great job by Adrian Newey again, a great car. No tyre wear problems. Such a great car in race trim. But Mercedes engine this year has some reliability problems.

3. Williams- without a doubt, best of the rest, most consistent apart from the Top two. great year for BMW

4.Arrows- the most improved team from last year. got great staight line speed , isn't it?

5. Jordan- a few steps backward this year. but on occasions, were fighting for podiums. car compromised by reliability


Magic Moments:
1. Schumi's tears- i was stunned by the tears in monza.

2. Suzuka - such an intense fight, I can feel the great atmosphere even though i was watching at home

3. Hakkinen's pass at SPA- against most opinions, that pass was helped by McLarens greater straightline speed and the double slip stream. Nevertheless, a great pass. split second move by Mika

4. Rubens first win- he was drained with emotion

5. DC laughed at in post race Suzuka interview!!!

Teams:

4) Minardi-no funding, a two-year-old engine and one driver who had no right to be there and they actually didn't look so bad

Moments

1) Schumacher's win at Monza and the emotional response

3) USGP at Indy and the great response by US fans
4) DC's win in France
5) Ruben's brilliant drive in Germany

Drivers:

1. Schumacher Michael - WDC: Not much more to say than that.
2. Rubens Barichello - Whether paying or salaried, F1 Drivers are good - they wouldn't be in if they weren't. For someone to pull of 20+ passes and drive from the back to the front in one race, they must be something special.
3. Jenson, for sticking up two fingers to everyone who said he shouldn't be there.

After that I'm struggling - the rest were pretty much mediocre. DC proved he's getting closer to Hakkinen, who himself had a throughly average season. No-one really shone though.


Teams:

1. Ferarri. Did the double. One-man team or otherwise, a clean sweep cannot be ignored.
2. Williams. First season back for BMW, and came out best of the rest. Nothing to complain about there.
3. Mclaren. Two runners-up spots out of two is commendable, even if it's not up to their usual high standards.
4. Arrows. The touch of Mr Walkinshaw is (finally) beginning to rub off
5. BAR. Just shows that when they stop talking and start acting, they are actually vaguely capable.Schume winn


Moments:
1. Rubens' drive through the field in Germany. Just to remind us that there is still some overtaking in F1 occasionally.
2. Mika and TGF double-teaming poor Zonta at Spa. Simply one of the best overtaking manouveres I've ever seen.
3. DC and his finger on Schume in France
4. Schume winning at Monza
5. My father's reaction when Martin Brundle - on the grid at a race I can't remember (was it USGP??) interviewed Sarah Fergueson, the Duchess of York

Best drivers:
1) Michael Schumacher - blindingly quick in the wets and dry, and a stylish win of the WDC!
2) Mika Hakk - blindingly quick in the dry
3) Jenson Button - brilliant first year in F1
4) David Coulthard - his great performance, though inconsistent, shows he still has the potential
5) Jarno Trulli - for his brilliantly fast pace and out-performing HHF

Best team:
1) Ferrari - ALWAYS
2) Mclaren - Great car...good o' Mika and Newey
3) Williams - Great year with the BMW and 2 young drivers
4) Arrows - Giant Improvements
5) Minardi - 2 year old engine could actually hold Mika Hakk behind...proves alot about the team!

Greatest moment
1) the moment when Michael pass the finishin line in Japan...THE WDC IS WON~
2) Michael crying...ITS POSSIBLE AFTERALL!
3) Mika's THAT overtaking move in SPA...not the best EVER, but the best this season!~
4) Rubens on the top step of the podium...
5) Minardi in front of a Mclaren in US and Malaysia...cool performance!

1. TGF - no explanation needed.
2. Mika - incredible comeback mid-season and very gracious in defeat.
3. Ralf - well...I hardly need to explain that!

1. Ferrari - brilliant double.

3. McLaren - had those typical beginning of season reliability problems.
4. Arrows - not at all bad...
5. Minardi - Showed that they can fight even with that dire engine.

Magic moments:

1. Barrichello in Germany
2. TGF crying at Monza
3. Ralf's three podiums
4. The Ralf-Michael Silverstone battle (I look back on that with fondness...)
5. Mika Hakkinen not being able to overtake Mazzacane (and Murray Walker's lack of observation and amazement that there were no blue flags...)

- Williams, almost there. Good job, by BMW as well.
- Minardi, bravo Gustav, I am truly amazed.
- Honda, brilliant as expected. Big thanks for teaming up with Eddie.

- Schumacher unable to pass Gene and Diniz at Albert Park
- Mazzacane outbraking Schumacher at Monza
- DC's deliberate false start and patheticly executed blocking at Indy
- Hakkinen unable to pass Gene at Indy

- Frenzy's frantic blocking qualifyings
- There's still something called a GP at Monaco!
- And there was an American GP again, but not at Road America!

1. Schumacher - much to my chagrin, he is once again the WDC. Must give him credit though, he did it with dignity and style.
2. Hakkinen - put up a fight worthy of a champion, and lost like one. Class Act!
3. Button - pretty much everybody said his arriving in F1 at such a tender time in his development was a mistake,including myself. Guess we were wrong!
4. Trulli - tough, fast RACER! Frentzen better pick it up!
5. Coulthard - like his never say die attitude!

Teams:

1. Ferrari - WCC & WDC 'nuff said!
2. Williams - Excellent chassis.
3. McLaren - fast as always. But to finish first first you must finish!
4. Arrows - Most improved! But what's an AMT!
5. BAR - third best engine on the grid! Shame about that chassis.

Magic moments:

1. Australia - I Love a New Race Year!
2. Mika's pass on Schumacher at Spa!
3. Barrichelo's first win! What a way to do it! On drys in the wet!
4. Coulthard hand signaling Schumacher!
5. Jaguar's entry into F1! I Love my Jaguars, for better or for worse.

For any of us to be completely impartial and unbiased in putting forward selections of the best drivers etc. is indeed a difficult exercise. I mean, most of us favour a certain driver more than we would the others for whatever reason we may have.

In an attempt to determine the best in as objectively as possible way, I thought that the determination of a "Win to Start" ratio would give a clear picture. I obtained some statistics from the FORIX website (www.forix.com) and 'lo and behold :

1 - Manuel Fangio (47.06%)
2 - Jim Clark (34.72%)
3 - Michael Schumacher (30.77%)
4 - Alain Prost (25.63%)
5 - Ayrton Senna (25.47%)
6 - Damon Hill (19.13%)
7 - Nigel Mansell (16.58%)
8 - Niki Lauda (14.62%)
9 - Jacques Villeneuve (13.41%)
10 - Mika Hakkinen (12.41%)

Then I thought that this does not make allowance for how good or bad the cars that were driven were. O.K. let's assume that the number of pole positions achieved would give an indication of that. I then determined a "Win from Pole" dependency and penalised each driver (or shall I say those of which I have the statistics so far) accordingly, and came up with the following:

1 - Michael Schumacher (42.31%)
2 - Alain Prost (39.61%)
3 - Manuel Fangio (38.95%)
4 - Giles Villeneuve (27.27%)
5 - Jim Clark (26.30%)
6 - Damon Hill (21.04%)
7 - Ayrton Senna (16.06%)
8 - Nigel Mansell (16.06%) marginal
9 - Niki Lauda (15.23%)
10 - Jacques Villeneuve (11.35%)

Oops! I said to myself, maybe I'm unwittingly trying to polish someone's marble, so let's give credit for podium finishes achieved per start:

1 - Michael Schumacher (66.86%)
2 - Manuel Fangio (65.67%)
3 - Alain Prost (60.70%)
4 - Jim Clark (38.00%)
5 - Giles Villeneuve (32.64%)
6 - Damon Hill (28.73%)
7 - Ayrton Senna (24.04%)
8 - Nigel Mansell (21.13%)
9 - Niki Lauda (20.04%)
10 - Jacques Villeneuve (14.26%)

Still not right! What about the average points scored per start? Surely credit must be given for that. At this point I went back to "FORIX" for the data of all the 2000 season drivers (a tedious business, believe me) and threw in Jody Scheckter (I am a South African after all) to see what pops up. This time 'round I had to calculate a rating from all the data I had as points scored could not be expressed as a percentage. See this:

1 - Manuel Fangio (7.96)
2 - Michael Schumacher (7.91)
3 - Alain Prost (6.21)
4 - Jim Clark (4.89)
5 - Ayrton Senna (4.7)
6 - Damon Hill (4.03)

Interesting to see that only 3 of the current ones make it to this Top 10 list and that DC is actually ahead of MH. Incidentally, Graham Hill scores a 1.69 and Giles Villeneuve 2.03.

Of the current drivers, and evaluated in the same fashion, 2000's Top 10 looks like this:

I don't know how this compares with the actual 2000 Drivers Championship positions, but it is rather interesting, I think.

Just as an afterthought, I read that JB, some call him Bunsen, seeks to challenge TGF in the future. The F1 fraternity appear to be more than pleased with his performance in his first 17 races. In TGF's first 17 races he had 6 DNF's and so did JB. TGF had 5 podium finishes and JB none. TGF was in the points 11 times (all his races but the DNF's) and JB 6 times.

SYKES I LOVE YOU...you have seen the quality, the beauty, the extreme talents, the great results, and most importantly why he is one of the greatest of all times---MICHAEL SCHUMACHER.

This is a fact that millions of members of the F1 family, from the experts (like Frank Williams, Berger, and a long list of others) to the not-an-expert (like me) had managed to see...and we do appreciate the wonders we saw before our eyes... THEY (the experts) have seen that before in the other greats like Senna, Prost, etc (i started following F1 live races the day Senna crashed...)...and WE have seen it now again in Schumacher.

Unfortunately, there are still some who failed to see what we have enjoyed viewing for the past 6-7 years, and thank you for your unselfish attempt to try and share this joy with them, at the expense of your time!

yeah Gt-R i very much agreed with you. he is the best at the moment.

and there is a very high chance that he will be the best of all time statistically. He will be the man of the decade. After Mansell, then Prost and then Senna left the sport, he is the man!!

Schumi has been at the front the longest among the current F1, has been acknowledged by most as the best, the best in wet conditions, the most consistent,... won the most races, won the most championships,.....what else can i say???
