New circuit - history
When there are new circuits, the FIA have allowed and extra practice on Thursday. Will they do this at Baharain?
I think it would be a good thing, especially since there is zero rubber put down. No cars have ever run on it. |

They'll probably all just sit in the pit lane to save their engines...

I would think that they would have to make some sort of exception on the engine - like allow work/replacement prior to Friday practice. I hadn't thought of that aspect of the extra practice.

I had the same curiosity; I looked for info and I could not find anything.
But if I recall it correctly in recent years the FIA has not run an additional training session for new circuits - the last one I remember was Interlagos in 1990, as I was there in that rainy Thursday... |

I think in more recent times they have just run an extra couple of hours on Friday.
I've not heard anything about Bahrain doing this. And how it would fit into the one-engine rule... |

The last one was in Melbourne in 1996. Neither Malaysia '99 or US in 2000 had one.

They stopped the Thursday practice at new circuits when they scrapped the limit on the number of laps you could run in Friday practice.

If there's any indication from recent history, Ferrari/MS wins at new circuits...and by quite decent margins too. See Sepang, USA... looks good!
But in the heat, with Michelin..it could work any way. |

Top 6 of last five first outings:
Hockenheim 2002 (I call it new as the track was changed so much9: MSch, JPM, RSch, RBar, DCou, NHei Last race of 2002 which Ferrari didn't have 1-2. Only 9 drivers finished, but still including top 5 of final standings. Indianapolis 2000: MSch, RBar, HHFre, JVil, DCou, RZon Häkkinen was chasing Schumacher before his engine failed. Coulthard dropped back because of jump start. Ralf Schumacher retired at the halfway on the way to the podium. Sepang 1999: EIrv, MSch, MHäk, JHer, RBar, HHFre Ferraris dominated race and Schuey drove ahead of Häkkinen whole time. Irvine dropped 2nd after late pit stop, but Schuey let him to win. Ferraris were disqualified by the race stewards but reinstated later. A1-Ring 1997: JVil, DCou, HHFre, GFis, RSch, MSch Häkkinen won the start but his engine failed on the first lap. Trulli took a lead and kept it for long. He dropped 2nd in pit stop and later he also had engine failure. M Schumacher dropped back after stop/go for overtaking Frentzen under yellows. Melbourne 1996: DHil, JVil, EIrv, GBer, MHäk, MSal Williamses on the top, Villeneuve had mechanical troubles and had to slow down late in the race. Brundle had huge crash in first start.
