Because he's a man and doesn't want to stop and ask for directions?

He has track map to show numbers of each corner. So when referring back to his engineer he can say what the cars doing at corner "x". This removes complication of referring to the actual corner name.

Many others used to have that IIRC. I haven't paid particular attention to that this year.

Yes, it is a common phenomenon.
Purely an aid for driver/engineer communication. |

A lot of drivers simply don't bother with them. Some relate to a circuit map on a piece of paper or a computer screen back in the pits.
Diffferent preferences for different folks. Personally, I think they must have pathetic memory span if they can't remember the corners off the top of their head. |

It's pretty common in lots of forms of motorsport. I heard a driver talking about it once & he said he didn't really look at it but it was just one of the things he did for each race the same as some drivers have lucky undies etc it doesn't make a difference but it's part of there routine.

I remember seeing that in others drivers cars... If Liz was still around she would certainly say that it is a script of where and when they have to slow down to let the Ferraris win...

... I'm waiting, hurry up! Don't look on Bononi's copy! ... See, still no answer eventhough you are stationery while f1 drivers must, all by their own, simultaneously drive at 360 kmh, talk to the pits, make adjustments to the car, keep an eye on their rear view miror, look at the map on their steering wheel, relieve themselves (this is a cross-reference to another thread), prepare for what they are gonna say to Louise Goodman, etc. P.S. BTW, excellent picture you now have of Montoya as avatar! |

And please bear in mind that we are talking here of someone who missed a testing session last year because he had a bed delivered to his home.

I think the problems with corner names is that those with similar names may get confused over the radio. With regard to numbers, then I'd imagine it'll be easy to lose count. A further problem is that not all corners have an official name/number which could make communicating infomation back to the pits difficult. Therefore, by having a small map it serves as a means of unifying information, which can eliminate confusion. Personally, I can't see it being a huge problem or else all drivers would have a map.

Another interesting nuance of those maps as used in F1 is that they often do not number corners/bends that are taken flat-out... if the driver doesn't have to lift, it doesn't count as a corner!

Some drivers have their map stick to the side of the cockpit.

Overall though, yeah they should learn the blummin' thing However I can see the use of it - it aids consistency between driver and engineer (if they have a copy too). |

I imagne they have it all off-by-heart, but have the map as a sort of psychological security blanket (i.e. can always check to be sure if desired)?
