I've just got back from my old stomping ground. Nipped in for the last hour for old times sake.
I asked about this and apparently a marshal [I think called Mike Kelly] broke his ankle, or leg, but not connected with the circuit activity. He tripped down some steps. |

Shelagh thought this was a copycat wind-up but now feels very guilty. She spoke to Paul Newns and discovered that Mike has broken his leg in 3 places - on the ice at Aintree on Friday. Makes her simple ankle break a minor injury!
Apparently Mike is not on-line at the moment and we have no idea how to contact him (other than through Paul, who has not volunteered as a contact). In the hope this message gets through to him - all the best mate, take it easy and don't drink too much while watching daytime tv (although you'll need it). And, by the way, E45 Cream is essential when you get the cast off! |

I have Mike's address, although I would be reluctant to give it out without some sort of "Nod" from perhaps Paul.

I saw Mike in hospital today. He has three breaks in his right leg, two just above the ankle and one below the knee. He is in plaster from the thigh to the ankle and this will stay on for about 6 weeks, then he'll have a shorter cast for another 6 weeks.
He's hoping to be out of hospital Monday or Tuesday. Mike wants to thank Simon and the Rescue crew, and the paramedic, for their help on scene. I'll keep in touch with Mike regularly so if anyone wants me to pass on their best wishes or any tips on living with a broken leg post them here and I'll make sure they get passed on. Marshals having a "unique" sense of humour, Glyn Williams pointed out that Mike is actually very lucky. Normally if you break a leg at Aintree they shoot you! |

I had a great time on Friday, being on post with you was a pleasure. Will you please pass on my best wishes to Mike. You explained his situation to me on Friday, do you know if there was any insurance that will cover him?

Paul. Please pass on my best wishes to Mike and hopes for a quick recovery. The knitting needle will have to be an extra long one, just be careful where you start from!

It reminds me of an old Tommy Cooper joke -
Mike: Doctor, Doctor, I've broken my leg in several places Doctor: Well, don't go to those places :O) Seriously, get well soon Mike. Considering the extent of the fractures, Mike was very well behaved. We managed to convince him that it would be comfortable to lean on his elbows whilst he lay on the floor. That way, I was fairly sure of not getting a punch in the kisser when we splinted his leg) Cheers for now Si |

Strangely, Mike was keen on us taking a photo of him whilst he lay there in pain so that we could put something in the marshals newsletter. I'll try and post one on the web as I reckon it will make a great caption competition (Mike wanted it published after all
Cheers Si |

If the injured official is a member of the BMMC and the same conditions as above apply, there is additional personal accident cover available under the Club's own policy. The Marshals' Club insurance also provides cover for "approved events" not just those covered by MSA permit or certificate of exemption and there is cover (with limits) for overseas marshalling too. Claims come to me initially, as BMMC National Treasurer, and are then dealt with by our Broker who has served us very well for twenty years or more. |

Next time, take more water with it Mike.
Best of luck with the recovery, but if you’ve survived Simon's attentions you will probably negotiate the NHS. (I said probably. ) Good luck. Jim |

MacGWC. Thanks for the info. I am not sure if the Aintree event was RAC sanctioned. Does anybody know? Anyway, it would appear from your information that the BMMC will cover Mike. Hopefully Paul can pass this information on to him. many thanks.

Mike (care of Paul, thanks for volunteering as messenger) - DON'T WATCH DAYTIME TV - it will turn your brains to mush. Dial your radio onto Radio 4 and enjoy quality nonsense instead.
Shelagh only had 8 weeks "entrapment" and still can't figure out how so many satellite channels can produce so little worth watching. Even Motors TV was in repeat mode (how many times can you view highlights of the UK F3 series?). Paul - as discussed, please pass on our tel no to Mike so we can swap "plaster stories" if he wishes! As well as our best wishes for healing well. (By the way we can sort out a reasonably cheap walking stick, should he require!) |

I've just had a text from Mike saying he's escaped and is on his way back home. I'll let him settle in and call him over the weekend.
As he's not on the Internet at the moment I've printed all of your replies and they are in the post to him. |
