Long interview with Tony Cochrane
Found a long interview published on crikey.com.au with Tony Cochrane, where he touches on Formula One, V8 Supercars (obviously), broadcast rights, running a race in Shanghai, and the possibility of getting manufacturers beyond Holden and Ford involved.
Note: This is said to be the second of a two part interview with him, but I haven't been able to find the first and suspect that crikey has merely condensed it into one large transcript: Tony Cochrane on Supercars and F1 |

TC: (still laughing) I didn’t know that we were arguing morals. I thought you were writing a story about motor sport?
This in a nutshell is why everyone hates TC. The real enthusiasts hate this attitude. |

Tony Cochrane barely has a clue about Australian motorsport, so why three quarters of the interview was wasted on his views of the politics in F1 and US open-wheel racing i'm not sure.....

I don't think Tony believes that anyone but him knows what goes on in the rest of the world.
With this attitude and his constant fiddling of numbers you really have to wonder about his attitude to the fans and the teams, he must think we are all knuckle draggers. |

Thanks for the insight.
I was more looking at it that, what is the point, what were they trying to achieve from his answers. Cochrane or anyone outside the forumla 1 section cant really answer these sorts of questions properly. |

Nice one Tony, glad to see his done his research before he shoots his mouth off. Im sure its just a one off though.
Other areas of the interview that got me asking questions were : - TC says BTCC averages 30 000 per round, while Supertaxis average 100 000 per round. Now do the BTCC include and count 3 days crowds like AVesco do ?? - TC says there is no argument that Supertaxis are the strongest Touring Cars series in the world. Well I'll throw in the quality of drivers. The Aussie drivers are very good, however they dont boast the likes of Mika Hakkkinen, Jean Aesi, Heinz Harold Frentzen, Allan McNish, Tom Kristenson, Laurent Aiello. Drivers are an integral part of the strength of a championship. - DTM races can be watched live in a total 17 countries. In addition to live broadcasts by ARD and ZDF in Germany. Now I realise this isn't free to air, but can the Supertaxis boast this ? - TC compares 1996 crowds of 450 000 to 2004 crowds of 1.6 million , paying customers. (Now I thought it was stated in here that 1.6 included corporates right down to the parking attendants.) But anyways, I wonder and doubt that in 1996 they calculated 3 day crowds, instead just using Sunday figures. I believe in 1997 the 3 day crowd emerged, funny so did AVesco. Now in 1996 the championship had 10 rounds with additional races at Indy, Sandown, Bathurst and New Zealand. Would this number of 450 000 be inclusive of these events ? If it wasn't then it kinda puts what TC said in a different perspective. I would have loved the reporter to ask questions about the the new WTCC beginning in 2005 and to hear TC's responses, instead of asking him Qs about F1. Finally TC said ,I dont know what peoples problems is with us, I have never understood the agenda of some people, its a shame really. I find it a shame that Aus motorsport has become so one eyed and that Avesco's practices are causing harm to Australian Motorsport as a whole. Eg the push for Street circuits, high sanctioning fees Last edited by D.R.T.; 19 Mar 2005 at 02:55. |

The fact that it wasn't his fault doesn't make it a valid claim.

192,000 in 1996 and 909,400 in 1997. Yes, more events in for 1997, but in 1996 there were clearly no non-championship events included. That is pretty fair.
