T for...........

On Sunday at Mallory the eagle-eyed marshals on post 7 noticed that several cars had circular stickers similar in size to an 'extinguisher' sticker, red in colour with a narrow white border & a large white 'T' in the middle. Despite the post being manned (& womanned!) by a team of very experienced, knowledgeable marshals (& me!) nobody knew what the sticker meant. A call to race control didn't bring forth enlightenment!

Yesterday, I asked a racer, who knew the answer. And the answer is......
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
......transponder!

Cue replies of 'I knew that' from hundreds of ten-tenthers!

Amazing these little things... I remember in my pre-marshal days being at Donnigton and wondering what all those "E" stickers meant. I just could not work it out, I knew all cars had them, but did not know what it stood for.
Then I became a marshal and found out, enlightenment at last!! I'd never spotted an electrical sticker though..
Most embarassing was, in my first marshal year, I asked someone what the "Z" sticker on F1 cars meant. I was humbled to find out it was not a "Z", but an "N" for the neutral button..... oops.

Never seen a "T" - but then, I might have been in danger of thinking it was a badly pronted upside down "L".....

Surprised no one spotted it before as they've been around a while. I think the first few lucky purchasers through MST / AMB of these "Must Have" items got a free sticker in the pack but then they stopped. I bought mine beginning of the first season we needed them with BARC but never got a sticker
But on a serious note they are not mandatory and IMHO could be misleading as they look rather official and safety related but if the Marshals are not told what they are could actually detract from say the "E" or "Ign" symbols.

Ah ha! Someone else who didn't know. Are all transponders the same? I didn't know if it was perhaps a brand teams use for their own personal timing rather then the MST things?

I got one with my new AMB Transponder a couple of months ago and stuck mine on the side of the car as per their instructions, dunno whether it was required or not but though I would stick it on in case. As I do graphics I scanned it in and have the file if anyone needs it.

But what good is it.

Is it an advertising ploy or does it have a purpose.

It doesn't tell the timekeepers anything as their equipment will say whether a "working" transponder is fitted. It doesn't help the marshals.

Guess this is where we ask you all for suggestions for other useless stickers!!

Yeah, good point-if I had a car I guess I'd use it anyway though, perhaps somewhere near the transponder itself-might make tech inspections easier/faster, at least.

Not seen any of those here (either that or I've not been looking close enough!), and we do use AMB transponders.

Ok then...

How about a B sticker to be affixed to the driver's helmet?

on a more serious note however, I noticed at least one of those T stickers and was completly mystified as to their purpose. Closer inspection revealed the AMB Transponder thingy, but I still can't see the point of telling everyone you've got it.

I might believe that the T confirms a transponder is in place, but the B is too much to accept.

Well done Dave

I'm still waiting for Race Control to return my telephone call. (They are probably still thinking "He's not got enough to do out there." )

The idea accordingt o the instructions, is to place the sticker in the vicinity of where the transponder is located to make it easier for the scrut to find it, not a terrible idea at the end of the day as it helps you guys.
