Why did Ferrari fire Arnoux
Why did Ferrari fire Arnoux one race into the 1985 season?

Interesting.
Was it already known that he was going to Ligier for 1986 ? Could it be to do with an Italian and French rivalry ? Same as the Michelin tyres debate.. Renualt apparentally getting a better set them Ferrari. |

Its strange that Ferrari chose to sack him 1 race into 1985 after he'd finished 4th in Brazil. If it was because they were dissatisfied with his performances why wasn't he let go at the end of 1984?

There were rumours of both romantic entanglements and a problem with a certain non-performance enhancing substance...

I've read two suggestions
1. He was into cocaine or similar 2. He was having an affaire with Ferrari's granddaughter, the team manager's wife, or some other lady. What is curious is that at the time the press, even the Italian press, kept very quiet about the reason. |

From what I understand it had something to do with cocaine. Someone caught him taking it before he got in the car during a test after the Brazilian GP. I think Prost new something was up with Arnoux when they were teammates at Renault. He said more then a few times, that someone like Arnoux was not good for F1. In 83 he said that he hoped Piquet would win the Championship if he (Prost) wasn't going to win it, because he feared that Arnoux was bad publicity for F1 and would give people the wrong idea what F1 was all about. He said this in an interview in Grand prix International. To me it seemed like he knew Arnoux had a coke problem, claiming that Arnoux as a person was not good for the image of F1.

Could this stem back to the "f1 drivers on cocaine" story that was floating about during the european winter.
Maybe this guy who had so called connections to Ferrari had connections circa 1985, and not in 2005 ?? |

Well I can't add much certainty to why Rene was replaced after the '85 Brazilian GP, but here is what The Great GP Enclopedia says about the affair:

I've read a story that Ferrari wanted De Cesaris to replace him, but Guy Ligier wouldnt let him go without a fistful of cash.
If so why did Ligier sack De Cesaris before the season was out. |

So it could have been a straight swap if it wasnt for the money involved ?

If he'd left at the end of '84, wouldn't that have left a place open for Bellof?

I agree Ensign, it was only the fag money that kept him going for so long. I don't believe Ferrari, even in those days, would have wanted him. Having said that, he did some races in the Lancia LC2, maybe they were stumped for cash too...
