Le Mans 2010 DVD?
Anyone seen or heard any news of this yet? I'm sure I've normally bought it by now and I haven't seen it advertised anywhere - Duke, Amazon, Ebay - not a mention........

Yeah, it usually makes an appearance around this point in the year, but there's nothing on Duke Video's website.
Hopefully a good sign. Perhaps they'll use the extra time to check their facts this year, after 2009's effort was full of gaffs. |

It usually is - even though they add on the commentary after the event they still make mistakes. I still hanker after the RLM commentaried videos of the 80s and 90s.

Certainly with regard to books, and presumably the DvD, the story is that the ACO has become very aggresive in its pricing policy, to the point where making a profit is not a given. That is most likely the issue. |

Hmm, interesting - I simply cannot believe that there won't be an English-voiced DVD.....

Having seen the reviews on the 2009 dvd, I can see why Duke stopped making them.

Your Mystic Meg act is firing on all cylinders, I got word from Duke that there will be a DvD this year, so much for the good news. On the other hand I am now screwed out of the deal, consolidation with a big agency, another nail in the financial coffin.

Bitter-sweet eh? I tenmd to agree with Speedworx though, although the DVDs have had bits added to them over the years, since they employed added-on commentary instead of the RLM commentary, they've never been the same. I buy it every year, but seldom watch it more than the once, whereas I played the Sportsseen videos over and over again. I had to buy a second copy of the 1988 RLM video as I wore the first one out!

So, that'll be 50 minutes of pre-race guff followed by 40 minutes of actual racing, I guess? Was seriously unimpressed with last year's offering, but like the mug I am, keep buying the damn things year after year! |

I buy them out of habit and watch them once or twice. They could be much better of they concentrated on the race footage - particularly the night - and did something (anything!) about the dreadful commentary.....

Yes, I think they try to make the DVD appealing to new watchers, by including the scrutineering stuff, loads of qualifying and so on in addition to the race but forget the one essential fact - it's generally only the diehard Le Mans fans who buy the DVD! Now what we need is a boxed set - all 24 hours with full RLM commentary......

You can download the whole 24hours of RLM from the website, if you are so inclined...
http://rlm.0157.org/lm24.php is your starting point. It also includes the full qualifying shows and other bits that they get up to. |

Yep, I burned the whole 24 hours to CD as soon as I got home and I listen to it in the car to and from work every day. I'm just finishing my FOURTH full listen - last year I managed 14...... The commentary is brilliant, but those who remember the RLM commentaried Sportseen Le Mans videos will know just how good they were in contrast to the lame offerings from '96 onwards..... |

It's no secret - I did the same in 2008.... Obviously there are some around here who don't know what a Le Mans anorak I am yet.... 25 straight years at the race and 9 years on the internet. The RLM commentaries are a lot more entertaining to listen to than any music on the radio or the daily doom and gloom of the news. And it keeps Le Mans still 'close' even with many months to go.....

The RLM coverage is a trusty companion in Jan/Feb/Mar on my commute to work. Troublingly, it goes to illustrate how much time I spend in car going to and from when you realise that getting through the 24 hours plus coverage doesn't actually take all that long!
As I and others have said before, 2009 was a real new low in coverage terms. The commentary has often left a little to be desired, but at least for most of the 2000s there was at least the impression that the commentator was reasonably engaged and enthusiastic, and with that you could forgive some of the ho-hum moments (interviews with Brits eulogising fact you can get a decent fry up in Le Mans) and ponderous phraseology ("now for the all important qualifying" or "the little Lola"). 2009 felt like it was a poorly paid bloke reading a badly written script with little or no rehearsing, it didn't work, and I'm amazed anyone thought it did. By contrast look at Jason Statham's voice over of "Truth in 24", or Vic Elford in "The Speed Merchants" and you see that sportscars are great raw material for cinema verite if done properly; I genuinely think the ACO is missing a trick in not making the annual review film something really worth rewatching time and time again. |

Like the others I'm sure I will still probably buy this. The format of the DVDs is pretty inexcusable mind.

Now have my copy.
Initial impression is better than '09, picture quality is very good and the reading of the commentator's script has been done better. |

Right, finally got my hands on a copy and I'm pleased to report that after last year's debacle, it's a lot better. No massive howlers on par with TK apparently departing from Le Mans racing etc.
They've covered most of the pivotal moments in the race, and they also dip into the other categories as well, with Strakka Racing receiving ample airtime. So all in all, much better than 2009's offering. |

Well, I've got it now. I ordered it just after Xmas and the Royal Mail took a fortnight to get it to me.....
As I said above, I buy these to keep my collection complete. I watch them once, and rarely get them out again. I just hate the added on commentary. But this is a real Jekyll and Hyde! On the one hand, I think the design and the footage is much better than in recent years. We don't have to sit through half an hour of scrutineering - yes, there's a reasonable amount of pre-practice atmosphere, but I think they've got the balance right this time. They've captured a reasonable amount of the incident in the race, but certainly not all. A few more action replays of Evil Davidsons and Pug explosions wouldn't have gone amiss..... But there ARE howlers.
And those are just the ones I remember now, 3-4 days after watching it. But goofs not withstanding, I do think it's worth a purchase this year. |
