Johnny Herbert ALMS Champion 2002?
Just found this over on Dailysportscar.com:-
OK, time to be controversial. The result of the Sebring 12 hours will determine who will be champion - Johnny Herbert or Andy Wallace. Herbert's CART deal with the Sigma team has fallen through, the Briton has committed to the full season with Champion, apart from the season-opener at Sebring, where he will drive the 2002-factory Audi with Dindo Capello and Christian Pescatori. Why for the championship, when the factory team has dominated for the past two years and Champion has not won an ALMS race? Simple - the factory team is considering missing the now second round of the championship at Sears Point in May, owing to the fact that it is so close to Le Mans and the Le Mans trials. That would give Herbert and Wallace a one-race advantage over the rest of the Audi drivers and, as Pirro demonstrated last year, you only have to finish well to stand a chance in the championship. "The Champ Car deal has done its normal trick and run away and hid," said Herbert. "I am doing Sebring with the new Audi, so I think there is a chance of organising a championship. The works Audis are not going to Sears Point because it is too close to Le Mans, so we will battle with the Panoz." Go Johnny, Go! ! ! |
