Round 15: ABC Supply 500, Long Pond, PA. August 22-23, 2015.
Round 15: ABC Supply 500, Long Pond, PA. August 22-23, 2015.
The Pocono 500 started in 1971 as part of the USAC National Championship Trail and part of USAC's "Triple Crown", comprising the Indianapolis 500, Pocono 500, and California 500. After the CART/USAC split, the race became a CART event from 1982 - 1989, after which it was dropped, mainly due to the rough track surface as well as poor safety features, like boiler plate retaining walls and a lack of run off areas and catch fencing. After a 23-year hiatus, the IZOD IndyCar series successfully revived the race in 2013, as well as the "Triple Crown". It adopted the 1971–80 USAC format, with the Indianapolis 500 in May, the Pocono IndyCar 400 in July and the MAVTV 500 in October at Fontana, replacing Ontario which held the original California 500, as it no longer existed. In 2014 the race returned to it's original distance of 500 miles and is the fastest 500 mile race in Indy car history, with an average speed of 202.402 mph (325.734 km/h) and was the first 500-mile race to be completed in under 2 hours and 30 minutes. Some trivia: Triple Crown: Al Unser Sr., 1978. The driver with the most wins, A.J. Foyt: 1973, 1975, 1979, 1980. The team with the most wins, Team Penske: 1971, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1989, 2014. The track has a unique layout with three turns, each based on 3 other tracks. Turn One, with 14 degree banking, is based on the now defunct Trenton Speedway. Turn Two, also known as "The Tunnel turn", is like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with 9 degree banking and Turn 3 has 6 degree banking, similar to The Milwaukee Mile. Track Layout: Length: 2.5 mi - 4.023 km Turns: 3 Lap record: July 5th, 2014, Juan Pablo Montoya, 223.871 Mph - 360.285 km/h. Team Penske, Dallara DW12-Chevrolet, Verizon IndyCar Series. Last year's winner: Juan Pablo Montoya, Team Penske, Dallara DW12-Chevrolet Laps: 200 Distance: 500 mi - 804.672 km Race Time: 2:28:13 Average Speed: 202.402 - 325.734 km/h TV Coverage: NBCSN Green flag, 2:00pm ET. |

Excellent post #1 again, sir. Completely forgot about the Triple Crown.
I'll have to catch this one on youtube as I'll be traveling this day, but what a great track for OW cars. |

I'm concerned this will be a Chevy walkover (or more specifically, Penske\Ganassi walkover). At least Dixon still has a chance at the title if he wins here.

Almost ready for the green. Let's hope it won't get too much of pack racing.

Unfortunately I'm going to miss most of this but I'll see the start and hopefully catch the end.
The crowd doesn't look, too bad. |

That was a complete mess around they go and they waive it of again. Despite a third dodgy start Newgarden gets the better of Castroneves.

Damn, Vaultier just screwed up big time with a hopeless dive bomb on Rahal. But considering the way it's going, there's still a pretty decent chance the other title contenders will also be wrecked at some point...

Yeah, I guess Vautier missed that part in the drivers' meeting the commentators were talking about... where they were told not to interfere with championship contenders if they were out of the hunt.
I'll be interested to hear Justin Wilson's comments on this incident, if any. |

I've just got back and I see there's a full course yellow and what looks like a very nasty accident with Karam and Wilson?

Yeah Karam crashed on his own, Wilson was struck by debris (looked like the nose of karams car) and lazily hit the inside wall, didnt look good at all but im hopeful as the TV coverage showed many replays.

Wilson hit debris after Sage's crash. Looks like the fender-bodywork hit his head.
Hoping it's not serious! |

Oh dear. Karam bins it, but Wilson coming a bit behind gets Karam's flying nose cone straight to his head, and then he spears into the wall.
Medical team on the scene immediately. I hope Justin is only concussed at best. Edit - Helicopter on scene. Even if it's precautionary I fear the worst. |

Surprised the race hasn't been red flagged, presumably they cant continue without a medical helicopter?

The race will run out under yellow in a few minutes anyway.
The faces in the pits look sombre at best. Hope Wilson isn't too badly hurt, but I suspect otherwise. |

And yet, race control decides to restart the race...********! Also, IndyCar should really do something about the aero for ovals, because it's quite suspicious that there were plenty of accidents at turn 1 today. This race kinda reminds me of the 1992 Indy 500 in terms of the number of accidents...

Oh, that did not look good at all. I hope that nose cone hit the bodywork near Justin Wilson rather than his helmet...
Re-start with 7 to go. Did Sato jump the start? |
