Yoong to Jordan??
Interesting scenario...Yoong in a Jordan in 04!!
I can't remember for the life of me where i read it, but it said Yoong had Formula One racing options for 04, and it wasnt Minardi, as they still owe him cash from 02. |

So what precisely would be wrong with Alex Yoong going to Jordan in 2004? It would be a good move, they have a good powerplant, and if the team sponsorship position improves, have the basis of a strong chassis to move up the grid.

More importantly is what Yoong could bring to Jordan as I'm sure he's got a list of Malaysian backers just itching to throw money at a team that will run him

Is this Yoong fishing for sponsorship deals, as opposed to having the cash to spend right now ?
The reason I ask, is that not long ago he was struggling to get backers for CART, which is certainly cheaper than F1. Also, didn't Stoddart alledge that some of his last backers didn't actually pay the full amount in the end, hence they allegedly didn't pay Alex ? |

If Eddie Jordan hires Yoong the team must be in some trouble.

I don't think a team can run Yoong and expect to be taken seriously. He's already shown he's not up to it, there must be better drivers out there with a budget surely? (If that's what Jordan are after)

I dont think some of the posters here can be taken seriously!
A brand new driver in a team without a test program, and without a significant spare parts budget is not the manner in which to judge the talent of this driver. Pizzonia was highly rated by all and sundry and got hosed by Webber. Wilson arguably has done no better but his nationality seems to have extended his Jag life. We are yet to see Mr Yoong at his full potential. I for one would like him to be in a professional, well engineered, well funded team and then judge his performances. Otherwise you are just having a bash for the sake of it. |

Actually, in the Hungarian press it was stated that Zsolt Baumgartner needs 7 million USD to drive for Jordan next year. He seems to have the money together. He is not a super quick driver, but is better than Yoong and does not crash carst too often. He also knows the team well, so if money is needed he would be a logical choice.

How is Zsolt Baumgartner better than Yoong precisely?
The motoring press were laughing at Zsolt, including pictures of him in their race report with captions along the lines of "blink and he will disappear back into the obscurity from whence he came" |

Yoong did just fine in CART. His sponsorship however was foscused on the country of Malaysia. CART has no presence there and plans none in the future. CART being cheaper than F1 means nothing here as Yoong's sponsors are looking for relevant exposure.
I don't think he is an up and coming star either but judging him based on what he did with Minardi is unfair simply because he was with, well, Minardi! |

Judging by his displays in CART, Yoong may not be a no-hoper. His situations at both Minardi adn Dale Coyne were difficult, yet he came out of Minardi with some moderate credit, and made a real impression in CART.
I guess Eddie wants more money from drivers he feels won't be as competitive, ebcaue if he ahs soemone in the car doing well, they have more chance of getting longer-term funding. |

Despite his er, pathetic crash at Druids, Yoong was actually very competitive at Brands in a Dale Coyne Chassis, infact he was all over Jourdain Jnr and was fending off a very feisty Haberfeld. He put on the strongest PERFORMANCE (not result) by a Dale Coyne car all year there. Why? Alex comes across as a cery sensitive man and he was made to feel WANTED at D.C - he was racing without sponsorship too. He was listened too and respected and that made him far more confident. Plus, he has a kid now so that's added extra happiness, sense of purpose and pride to his life...
Also, look at his performances relative to Webber in the final 3 races of '02 - he was ahead of Webber for the early stages and was v.close to the Australians pace at the US too. Infact he was far closer to Webbers pace than Wilson was... Ok he's not in the top 20 drivers of the world, but he ain't as bad as his reputation suggests...If Ralph keeps his seat and if Alex is made to feel apart of the Jordan setup, I think Ralph may face a far stronger challenge than he'd expect... |

BootsOnthSide I ahve to agree I will be one of the first to say I did not think much of Alex in Minardi but he has shown he is building up his driving in CART. I would hope he does one more season out in CART or does alot of mileage over winter - anyone got an Escort of something so they can runa n engine in the car? - he has talent not topline talent but I'd say he'll hold his own in the mid-field and who knowns in time...
One brief thought -what's in a name? Wilson pays for a drive but being British that's fighting spirit, Yoong ghas rich pals who spot him having to go begging for cash. If Yoong was Britsh would he get knocked as much? Last edited by Phoenix1; 12 Nov 2003 at 15:25. |

Great point. I think we all know the answer to that - no is the predictable answer! I've got to confess I wasn't at all impressed with Firman and had he been a Malaysian with bundles of cash I'd expect that he wouldn't have had so much sympathy for his lame performances this year...
Oh it's great to be contrerversial... |

I think Yoong, along with Pizzonia deserve one more chance in F1. Nobody looks very good driving a Minardi, and Pizzonia's half a season in the Jag shouldn't be enough to say he can't cut it. Not to many people are writing off Wilson, and he hardly did any better in the Jag.
As fans, sometimes we demand the impossible. |

I think there's much better people that could be in a Jordan seat rather than Yoong. After all, if Yoong was that good wouldn't he have stayed in F1?

I also liked the way Yoong debuted in Champcars,he flown to Mexico just a day before the race jumped into a car that was totaly new to him and did a real quality job.But thats the only race where he impressed me,including his FRenault and F3000/Nippon efforts.(Ok his pace was nice in Indianapolis during the friday practices)
By the way recently both Yoong and JordanF1 are in China,Macau! Yoong is racing in the Asian Prosche Cup with a GT3 and is recently 2.5sec off the pace againts a not exactly competetive field (a field of 3 Malaysians,8 drivers from Hong-Kong , 7 from Thailand and one from the UK) While JordanF1 is making history with Ralph Firman as they are doing a demonstration run on the streets of Macau. The first ever laps for an F1 car to run in China. So yes, officialy Firman is still with the team. |

Did you notice how many laps Mr Yoong actually did in that practice session compared to the guys in front of him?
I mean why let facts get in the way of a good driver bash. |
