TLs, TLs, TLs???

NZV8 Challenge Cup revved up for a big future

The NZV8 Challenge Cup – the TL series for V8s designed to provide a pathway to BNT V8 SuperTourers and beyond – is to re-double its efforts to become the number one choice for both up and coming and gentlemen V8 drivers.

The Cup - organised and run by some of the most respected names in New Zealand motorsport - is now aiming to build its field to 15 cars and more and is promising some major announcements to attract drivers and teams.

“It’s common knowledge that we were working towards a unified championship for TL-based cars but that landscape has changed with the announcement of another series for TL cars,” explained series co-ordinator Stephen Gillard.

“The good news is that everyone involved in the NZ V8 Challenge Cup is keen now to put all that behind them and get on with the real business of motorsport which for us is to provide the benchmark TL series. By that we mean the best racing on the track, the best choice for drivers and sponsors of this type of car and a great community in motor racing.

“We have several huge announcements to come and we are unashamedly aiming to attract all owners of TL specification cars to run in our series. We are on the card with the premier V8 series in New Zealand – BNT V8 SuperTourers, we offer terrestrial TV which sponsors tell us is much more valuable to them than satellite delivered coverage and that’s only the beginning. It’s really a case of watch this space - you won’t have to wait too long.”

The next round of the V8 Challenge Cup will be at the Pukekohe round of the BNT V8 SuperTourer series which takes place at the new look track over the weekend of May 25 and 26.


so what is the other series for TLs? the original series? also..weren't the CC guy meant to get a better tv deal this season? what happened to that?

I saw that too, was wondering what the other series was? Does that mean the truce is over? Who is organizing the other TL championship?

The Tulloch , Concept and Richards Toyota cars had new "NZV8 Touring Car" logos on them at Puke.

Possible remnants of the NZV8 series now that actual NZV8 structure is controlled by CC??

I'm hearing rumours around a group who are calling themselves "New Zealand V8 Touring Cars"

I don't know who is behind it (I only have a feeling that I don't want to make public) but they want to provide racing for a TL/TLX class next season.

I thought all of this was over, but seems people are still trying to

Just looked it up. The company, New Zealand V8 Touring Cars Ltd was incorporated in 2002 (so nothing new there) and is 100% owned by..... Motorsport New Zealand!

Here's a list of the directors, you will notice they have all been appointed in March this year:

So what this says to me is that Motorsport New Zealand have set up another competition, despite publicly saying that they wanted ST on board, but it would seem the likes of Budd and co. have prevailed over the likes of Crunch, so we are going to continue to have a split series and will continue to have damage done to the sport. Well done, people, you certainly have your own interests at heart rather than those of motorsport (as we all knew anyway).

Will this be another Gold Star championship with 5 cars again? Good chance of getting a top three finish then...

Another point of interest, is that its registered office is with Map and Associates - our mate Mr Fine still involved, then. The more things change the more they stay the same, as the saying goes.

so what happened to everyone being one big happy family? after reading that article... sounds like nothing has changed. if CC/NZV8CC/TLwhatever remains purely a ST support class that only runs at a couple of north island tracks.. expect the class to have a short life span. the popularity of the class isn't that great to start with. the season is too long and drawn out.. their numbers are low.. and they only race in the top half of the north island.

There have also been two new company names reserved :

NZ Touring Car Championsip Ltd

New Zealand Touring Cars Ltd

I wonder if these have anything to do with MSNZ?

At a recent meeting with MSNZ a number of member clubs gave the clear message that MSNZ shouldn't be involved in the commercial side of the sport. The feedback we got from the MSNZ President was that they acknowledged the concern and it was very unlikely that MSNZ would be further involved.

With what is going on it makes you wonder ...........

Oh dear.....looks like last season all over again

So with this in mind we have one category that is 100% owned by the governing body (bit weird that one) who are continuing to push the combined TL/TLX category, I guess with the hope that more TLX's will be built?? But with only 5 being built in the first season and with below par drivers compared to the ST's it would be hard to see how this would turn in to a profitable business model. Lets say they double the TLX's, still only 10 cars and who will drive them? anyone of any significance?

I take it ST will just carry on without the 'blessing' of MSNZ, which is a shame seeing as they suggested that ST would be tier one very soon. They seem to change their minds as much as the wind direction does in Wellington (MSNZ that is).

But seriously for me personally I am FAST losing interest in this whole debacle, whether it be ST's going for cheap as chips TV coverage (am not happy about this at all) or the ongoing TLX project.

This really is a sausage fest isn't it.

I'm thinking of following lawn bowls from here on in. I have heard its quite a stable sport.

Although in saying that, a sport which involves very large men in very small shorts chasing an odd shaped ball, is, well, a bit iffy. especially during those many 'man-love' moments and fingers being put where fingers shouldn't go.

Ya see, lawn bowls just doesn't have any of that lots of appeal there methinks. Although I did hear down at the local RSA that Maud's pikelets were not as good as Rosies this year which has caused a stir among the bowling community. Its like a roller coaster that sport

Ah yes the NZV8STCC....its kinda been suggested before on here, and to some (myself included) this does make some sense.

Why not have the top tier as a choice of either a TLX or an ST, with the TL's providing the support?

Could parity ever be achieved do you think between an ST and a TLX?

Inky Tullock suggested to me a while back that if the power went up to 580hp then the TLX would be a match for the ST.

But its not about that is it. Its not about creating a sustainable motorsport category in NZ. Its just about who has the biggest ego, and the shortest, short-man-syndrome.

I will happily state here that I now personally don't care who gets granted as tier 1 (ST's or TLX), all I care about is good fields, professional looking teams with great drivers and lots of cool cars. And of course something that is comparable to what happens over the ditch. I thought we had achieved that with ST, but maybe not....

Loving this. V8CC answers MSNZ's new TL series with this...! Potentially the biggest boost available to any young driver in this country today? Doesn't say a lot about incentives for young drivers, but a 20k prize fund is a 20k prize fund. Good on them.


Cogent sign up to V8 Challenge Cup with huge cash prize

The V8 Challenge Cup has confirmed a new series sponsor in Cogent Telecommunications and with it a massive $20,000 prize fund that will be shared amongst the drivers.

Ten thousand dollars first prize and the Cogent Cup will be will be awarded to the top scoring driver from the remaining rounds of the current series, which has races at Pukekohe at the end of the month, Taupo, Hampton Downs and then Pukekohe again for the grand finale. In 2014 it will apply to all rounds of the series. Overall championship positions and the V8 Challenge Cup for this season will still include the points scored at Rounds 1 and 2 held at Hampton Downs and the Pukekohe ITM 400.

A further $10,000 will be given in prize money, with $6,000 going to the driver scoring the second highest amount of points in the remaining rounds and $4,000 awarded to the third highest scoring driver. The V8CC runs predominantly with BNT V8 SuperTourers and recently confirmed it would continue as an independent series.

Our doors are open to any owner with a TL schedule car who wants to race either as a young gun or as a gentleman racer, all will be made very welcome,said series coordinator Stephen Gillard. The V8 Challenge Cup is the TL series with the highest profile meetings and the terrestrial TV coverage and the Cogent Cup is another great reason to get involved.

We see the production-based V8 Challenge Cup cars as offering the relevant mix of engineering and race craft skills necessary to advance to the main game either side of the Tasman. The cars are available for a fraction of the cost of a SuperTourer and running costs are proportionately far, far lower.he said.

The Cogent Cup is only open to TL schedule cars and drivers and excludes anyone who has already driven a V8 SuperTourer or TLX Schedule car in a race.

Sponsor Cogent is one of the countrys leading telecommunications specialists providing a full telecommunications package for small, medium and large businesses from strategy and planning through to implementation and on-going support. As part of its package for the V8 Challenge Cup it will also provide a discount on services to any business owned or operated by a competitor in the series' remaining 2013 rounds.

That's a good move, hope that helps to fill their grids! Would like to see 15 cars min at all rounds, although they tend to not all finish for various reasons.

what's good about that? it means we still have two separate parties.. moving in two separate directions. wasn't the plan to get everyone on the same page and moving in the same direction.. rather than trying to out do or crush the other side?

Yes it was, but it by the looks of some of the developments of late it would seem that MSNZ are not really interested in doing that at all. So rather than stay in a holding pattern, they have elected to move their competition forward and try to get a few more cars on the grid.

I don't see anything that would prevent a resolution with MSNZ in that.

40 V8s on the grid drawn from the 3 classes.

Real motor racing in NZ, especially if it was at Levels.

Why would you think that I would know anything?

I am not in the loop at MSNZ and never have been.

I have also retired from the management of my club.

Yes I was a director of TMC etc but I can assure you that did not ensure that you were in the loop.

Really just personal observations from the outside looking in.
