in car video cameras
just out of interest, does anyone know anything about fitting an in car video camera ?
MSA rules ? cost ? where from ? equipment needed etc ? i once saw a website with in car video footage (with sound) from a stock hatch, and I was very impressed |

I once saw a great telemetry package that also combined the data with in car video! There really would be no hiding your mistakes then.
As far as I can remember the use of in car camera equipment is at the discretion of the race organisers. I think there are guide lines in the blue book. Obviously the camera has to be securely fixed. I think there are similar guide lines at track days too! I wish I'd had one for the last race I was in! Someone spun and I collected them. It would have been nice to show him! |

I carry an in-car camera for all of my races in the UK.
Basically you have 3 things to consider. MSA Safety regs, the track owner rules and the safety of the camera. MSA Safety regs basically specify that the camera must be rigidly mounted and mounted to the rollcage by 2 fixing points. I use a small digital camera on a 35mm camera mount with a custom fixing to the rollcage. I then use tie-wraps as the 2nd fixing point. Scruts have always been happy with that. Track owner rules are slightly different. Octagon now specify you must get written permission to use a video camera. Basically you apply to them, they send you a form and authorise the camera for personal use (no selling the footage to You've been Framed etc) Smaller circuits like Pembrey, Lydden, Croft have never questioned the use of a video camera. Don't screw around with Octagon though - its a 250 GBP fine for unauthorised use... Camera safety is a moot point. If one of my fixing points fails I'm going to wreck the camera. You can't stop in the middle of the race to fix it HTH |

In Aus there were a few prangs where the camera came loose in the car (tripod mounts can't handle G forces) and a rule was bought in for cameras to be in a case or a camera specialy designed for motorsport. a case is not hard to make it is just a steel box with a hole for the lens and another hole for the controls and you line the box with foam to cushion impacts. A guy I raced against had the camera set up to look out the windscreen but the sunstrip on the screen took up the top quarter of the picture so he added a mirror for the camera to see out the back (usefull when you get hit up the date) and added lights hooked to the pedals and also a tacho and this made great viewing.
