Merlyn Mk 6
As an owner of a Mk6a I am interested to see what history is available on this model - they were not many produced and a lot I believe went to the states.

Simon,
We have one only over here in Oz , and that is ex the USA , however it came over about 1966 and stayed , owner/driver was a Mr. Bill Chapman who bought the car with him and when he returned the car stayed , by the early 1970's it had been badly damaged and is still in that state , unrestored. I believe that Colchester Racing Developments [ Mr. Clive Haywood ? ] still have all the drawings , moulds etc. I wonder if they have a sales list to start us with. I am sure the chassis plate for the car here is still extant , so will make enquiries. The car here was a 1500cc pushrod Ford. Bryan. |

The great thing about Merlyns are that they were made by Clive's brother who is now retired and living in Spain. The moulds etc are still available from Clive - he is very helpful. Which chassis number is it?

5 years ago nobody wanted them! They are now popular due to the number of events you can do in Europe

Merlyn mk6
There were 3 Mk6's in Ontario. One was owned by Louis Donolo and had Lotus TC 1600. He sold it to Gary Magwood and thence? Gary is still around and his E-mail can be found by going to any search engine, The 2nd one had a 1100cc BMC and later a 1800cc BMC. It was owned by Ron Evans and is now owned by Bruce Evans (no relation). He probably can be reached through VARAC's website. The 3rd one was owned by Bill Gibson and had a twinkle 1600. No other info.

Differences of MK6 v. MK6a
Hi. Does anyone KNOW the differences of a MK6 against a MK6a.....and for that matter the differences of a MK4 and the MK6. According to the CRD numbering sequence, they made a MK6 then a MK4 and then a MK6 again.
Also, does anyone have photos of the various frame changes ? I have two complete cars without RS numbers. They have SCCA logbooks back to the 70s so I know they are real. The logbooks say they are MK6. I also have a very original frame which I was told is a MK6a. One obvious difference is the tubes which makeup the dash bulkheads. Is one a 6 and the other a 6A ?? I've seen period photos of a MK4 in a magazine which look like one of my frames....is this a MK6 and the other a 6A ?? Any facts greatly appreciated. Thanks. brad Moore. |

Brad you should ask Clive at CRD - whilst the chassis number records are not perfect he can give you full chapter and verse on the difference between the Mk4, 6 and 6a.

Mk6B
Was there ever a Merlyn Mk6B made? There's an entry for a 1680cc Mk6B in the 1964 Malaysia Grand Prix (Singapore) but by that time the car had ceased to exist. It had apparently burst into flames during practice at the Johore Grand Prix (31Aug-1stSept 1963). The Johore entry was simply a Merlyn Ford Mk6. Owner Stanley Leong also had two other Merlyns - an ex-works Mk7 (probably a reworked Mk5) and eventually a Mk10 Merlyn (which went on to win the Singapore Grand Prix of 1967).
Does anyone know of Merlyn 6 chassis records? Eli Solomon Singapore |

There is an article on Merlyn in Autosport 22 Nov 1968 pp24-27. It says that a total of 29 Mk. 6 and Mk. 6A cars were built. No mention of a Mk. 6B

I've owned two of them, Chassis# 58 and 85.
58 I bought new in 1964, 85 I bought in the 1980s and restored it for historic racing. I sold it about 5 years ago. Between the two of them I've probably done a hundred races. Nice little cars and every bit as good as a Lotus 23. |

its funny 7 years ago when I bought my 6a no one really fussed about them - now restorations are coming out of the woodwork everywhere, I suggest that you chat to Clive at CRD

Merlyn Mk6
This Merlyn Mk6 was entered in the Formula 3 support event at the 1966 French Grand Prix held at the Reims circuit. It was Ford powered, Allan Taylor was the listed driver, the car was a DNQ. There were 57 cars entered in the event, but I think only 26 took the green.

my error
sorry, my error. This is an Alexis Ford. This is what happens when a geriatric insomniac pouring through nearly 50 year old black and white negatives has a "senior moment," and pushes the wrong button!

Bruno Mea of Mea kits is hoping to model the Merlin Mk6 in 1/43rd scale. He has access to a restored car but is looking for period pictures preferably in colour . If anyone can help he can be contacted at meakit@orange.fr
He makes a very interesting range of kits including Daren and The Felday that Jim Clark drove at Brands Hatch. |
