ITV coverage
Surprised no one has mentioned this yet.
http://www.btcc.net/html/generalnews_detail.php?id=1873 ITV won't be showing the final race from Rockingham live due to coverage of the Indian Premier League cricket final. Rockingham coverage now finishes at 3.15pm with an extra 90 min program later that night at 8.30pm. As usual the positive spin on this is that it gives the series prime time coverage. |

So one race out of 30 is not live. No big deal.
With the amount of TV time the BTCC gets we cant really grumble! |

I thought this was going to be a thread having a general grumble about the quality of the coverage. Oh well, i'll have a moan anyway;
Why is it that the on-board cameras now are so poor? A few years ago we used to have fantastic quality on boards which weren't shaking about all over the place, you could see the driver, steering wheel and gearstick all in one shot. Now all we get is a locked off shot of the view through the windscreen from the dash, or a facing driver view camera. The older mounted cameras were great, as you could see the track ahead, the driver at work, the wheel movements and the gearshifts. Why is it they have gone backwards? |

Maybe because the TOCA SpyCam is in the prime spot on the rollcage.

Thing that bothered me about the coverage was they seemed to try and be a bit of an everyman - knowing that the casual viewer will only be interested in the BTCC they did plenty of waffle on them; but also knowing that hardcore petrolheads would be a sizeable chunk of the audience they throw in the support races without really building them up (although Frenault got a bit of a big up) so the commentators have to do that while the race is going on.
it is a difficult juggling act & I am not saying they got it wrong, but they got it wrong *for me* |

The IPL is run by the 20/20 rules. So time is managed very closley. I wouldn't say im a cricket fan in particular, but i have been watching teh IPL while eating my dinner the last few weeks and its actually really entertaining.

Its 20/20 cricket so the time schedule is much more definitive. And the BTCC highlights are obviously not live so it doesn't matter if they start a bit later than advertised. They just time-shift the program.

The question that still begs for an answer is... why isn't the TV company allowed to use the same video feed as the stewards?

Consider yourselves lucky, at least you guys to get see all but one race of the season, the only races I will see is the ones that I will be at (Brands Hatch).
Since ITV messed around with ITV4 last year, we haven't been able to receive it, ITV4 will show up on the channel list, but is completely un-watchable. |

Also, the footage that is recorded by the spycams is nowhere near broadcast quality. |

The cricket won't over-run, it's 20 overs each, so will be finished in plenty of time. Then there will be an hour of rugby highlights at 7.30, and then the BTCC at 8.30.
The spycams in the cars aren't anywhere near broadcast quality, so while they are viewable when you watch back directly from the memory card on a small screen, by the time they've been through your average Sky box you'd see no detail at all. However it's wrong to say the only TV on-boards are ones mounted behind the windscreen, and facing the driver. Each car also carries an external forward-facing camera, external rear-facing camera, sometimes a camera on the wing mirror or side of the car, and often an effect camera (such as pedals, or suspension). |

I'm confused about this. If this is the case, and it's not good enough quality for broadcast, couldn't they put a broadcast quality camera there, giving the stewards better quality footage to asses, and giving us better footage. They'd even save money on cameras.

The footage is good enough to view on a steward's computer there and then. It's a decent spec of Fujifilm compact digital camera they use for it. That's all that matters to them. It's a simple case of removing the memory card and then playing it on their device. It'd be too much bother to get the footage from the TV company on demand like that. The V8s in Australia operate a similar 'Spy In The Cab' system and they still manage to supply good onboard footage from other angles.
