New dates for Homestead test

From IndyCarSeries.com -

IRL Road Test Re-Scheduled: Indy Racing League teams will get their first chance to test mechanical parts for use with a road-course package on Sept. 21-23 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Two Menards Infiniti Pro Series teams and five IndyCar Series teams will participate in the three-day private test. The test is closed to the media and the public.

A session scheduled for this weekend was postponed because of Hurricane Frances.

It's a shame it's closed to the media. Hopeefully some of the IRL's photographers will be on hand though.

Anyone have any idea of which teams and drivers will be taking part?

Actually there is one brewing right now, a category 4 already, named Ivan, I think, but its to early to say whether it will hit the mainland yet. Let's hope not, for reasons other than the test!

Does anyone think they'll be much of a performance difference between the chassis, and do you think that any of the engine's will be dominant?

When the IRL first announced their tests, the same teams that were involved then will be involved at this event....

They tried to get all possible combinations of Engines and chassis to be part of the tests....

But I can't remember who all of them were...

But a fickle lady (and I use the term loosely) named Jeanne is on a track that will bring yet another hurricane at or very near the Florida southeast coast...

and it is supposed to be in the "neighborhood" of Homestead early-mid next week...the dates these tests have been rescheduled for....

doesn't it figure???

An Update, then an Answer:

Hurricane Jeanne has turned north, then east...thus it will not impact the US coast, and the tests will go on as scheduled...

now for the answer:

The biggest tests for the new road packages will be cooling for the radiators/engines, cooling fo the brakes, and function and cooling for the gearboxes....and to a lesser degree, testing for the suspension parts...

Thus the IRL chose the hottest, most tropical place they could find to put these aspects of the new package to the stiffest stress tests possible....

Homestead will provide them with that "worst of conditions" test...September is always very hot and humind in the South....and even more so in a place like Homestead...

This will give all of the engineeers for the chassis makers as well as the other suppliers the best and most difficult tests for their products so they can take the data and make changes in time for next spring when they will race at St. Pete...

They also are planning to test different types of brake rotors, calipers, and cooling intakes as well to see what will work best...and thus decide wither the rotors will be steel, carbon-fibre, or whatever....as an example....

the data from the brake testing also will give the IRL some concrete results they can use to set their road package rules for brake systems and components for next season...

Grand Am did 1min 16sec laps yesterday.

Do we think IndyCar will be in the 1min 05sec range?

I think under the 1 minute barrier.
I know they have to test various parts but they have a lot of downfore although they are not designed for Road and Street courses.
They are bound to be a lot faster then the Grand-Ams there are slower then Karts.

Does anyone have an idea of how fast the Champcar did in the test in the spring around the Homestead road course, that could be a good guide line.

I thought Champ car did their Spring Training at Sebring????

Not Homestead....but someone might have tested there wihtout my knowledge...

Personally, I don't think you'll see these teams burn up the track this week...

They are interested in gathering data, not setting the world on fire....

I just want the tests to go smoothly, so that the chassis builders, brake manufactureres, gearbox suppliers, engine makers and such can get good baseline data from which to tweak their aspects of the package so that the road races can be successful next season...

Champcar traditionaly has spring trainning at Sebring but there was open tests at Fontana and Homestead road courses just before the season started. I remember well because it was when Wilson first jumped into a Champ car.

Correct - Sebring in JAN/FEB. I believe that they did however run the oval at Homestead during their `formative' years. That is all for naught however as the track has been reconfigured since then and the banking as well as the radii have changed.

IPS test today, ICS tomorrow and Thursday and Danika Patrick tests Friday for Rahal Letterman Racing although I'm not sure if it's on the road course or the oval.

I'm kind of hoping that Roger Yasukawa will get a full time ride with Rahal next year.

I hope Danica's IRL test goes well though, still would rather see Roger get a ride though.

Can't wait to see the Road Course shakedown results.

Let's hope he continues to date the divorcee....

Then we're sure to have a third car on the grid next year...

Question:

How "close' is "Real Close?"

You don't have to answer that, one, Team Owner...

But I had to ask it....

Leo Maia was the only IPS car to test today and the only problem he had was one of good brakes. The "shift-cut" didn't work as it was supposed to but he none-the-less ran 150 trouble free miles. Gary Peterson owner of AFS called at the last minute and said they wouldn't be coming because they were afraid of the conditions in south Florida. Roger Bailey told him " well they just ran a Grand Am race here yesterday and nobodys had any problem". Go figure

Oh yeh, almost forgot. Tim..........real close! Think dirty old man.
