ITV programme plugging
I was surprised it took James Allen 12 minutes before he started plugging the Euro2004 Final.
I dont seem to recall the footy commentators plugging the British GP coverage in return, although I stand to be corrected. |

Let's face it, who's gonna watch the footy on ITV when it's on BBC too?

Suprisinly some of us Motor sport fans can't stand football which irritates the hell out of me when they plug it!
Bunch of overpaid pansies diving around on the floor waiting for the magic sponge to be attended to their sore spots! Lets keep F1 and football seperate please! |

But ITV Sport is proud of what it can get, so you can't blame them. And football is followed by more people in Britain than any other sport. Can't you just ignore the 20 seconds or so while they plug football on F1?
Anyway, as you say, let's keep footy and F1 separate, at least in this forum... |

It makes perfect commercial sense for a broadcaster to forward promote.
The TV business is all about getting people to watch your channel for as many hours a week as possible. Therefore, when an event like the European Championships is on BBC and ITV, ITV want people to watch it on ITV. |

I love football.
I can't stand it when ITV plug it during F1 coverage. I'll always watch BBC coverage anyways....always interesting and hilarious to listen to Hansen, Lineker and Wrighty! |

Apparently the BBC got 3 times the viewing figures of ITV for the match, even though the ITV match represented the final show of the popular (especialy with women of a certain age) presenter Des Lynam. Hopefully the practice of showing the same match on 2 channels at once will end now.
James Allen's basically a corporate whore, sad to say. He always says what his employers want him to say. Murray never did anythign like this - in fact he avoided naming sponsors and suppliers who weren't having a big effect on performance. |

Why don't ITV break the football coverage up with adverts during injuries etc in the same way that they foul up the F1 coverage? Footie has 50 mins without a break.
Interesting how some games can pull rank on the advertisers - clearly F1 can't! |

At least Portugal v. Greece was a tad less predictable than virtually every GP this season.......

He never did though, even when the World Cup 98 final was on after the British GP.

Don't you just wish Jim Rosenthal would get himself back to a football stadium and stay there.

Jim and Matt Smith (from Speed Sunday) are football presenters - they have no real interest in motorsport and it shows, they're appalling. |

As someone who knows about these things........
The footy commentators/presenters would not promote the GP IF the GP was on prior to the footy!! The F1 team WILL "Tease Ahead" (As we call it in broadcasting)to a forthcoming programme. This is called Cross-Promoting. It's an unwritten rule in broadcasting that you don't refer BACK - that's why the footy guys won't usually be mentioning formula 1 etc. IF there was a live football match on TV in the afternoon on ITV1 and then a F1 race in the evening - say Canada or USA, then I could pretty much guarentee that the footy guys WOULD have to plug the F1 We have to do similar in radio too! |

I hate to stick up for ITV, really I do. But I have seen them plug Formula One during their football shows. As for adverts during footy coverage I'd guess that in the two hours of a football match and a GP there are probably the same number, just that in football you get loads before, at half-time, and afterwards. As for the Jim question, I'm putting my anti-ITV hat back on. However, we've discussed before who should replace James Allen - which sports presenter should replace Jim? I liked Matt Lorenzo on Bernie vision.

OK...cross-promoting, I can understand that...but would June Ackland interrupt the Bill to tell viewers what an exciting episode of Coronation Street was coming up later this evening? NO!
Why was James Allen using his commentary during the race to make a lengthy diatribe on something he clearly knows even less about than Formula One? And why is The Count on F1 anyway? Isn't that a cross-promotion too far? Confusing your brand identities, I say. I thought Tony Jardine did a brilliant job of presenting that Goodwood programme...I also think his punditry is rubbish - time for a reshuffle. |
