GA/Daytona costs (split from Daytona 24 thread)

From a freind Strolling the Garages, Paddock and Pit lane:

"According to the sanctioning body, all makes and models are held to 420 to 450 crank HP. and, weight is used to balance the field.

Almost all cars have sequencial shifting transmissions that cost a bundle..

Porsches cost new $250,000 to $300,000.
Pratt and miller cars are $325,000
The BMW 6 series car with a riley chassis is for sale at $300,000

All prices plus spares packages,

Katech motors are also available.

Not sure what DP HP levels are, but probably held to 500 hp or less at the crank...

All these numbers are estimattes, gleaned from many conversations in the paddock this weekend.

By the way, the Mazda that won GT had a tube frame (Riley) and except for the engine not much in the way of real mazda stuff. Supposedly, the engine cost $50,000 and will last 50 race hours...
I guess they have problems getting the real ones to go that long on the track.

The crowd was pretty big at Daytona... The infield was packed and lots of people there...

The garages for Rolex we Knee deep in $1,000 dollar bills, gucci loafers and expensive Porsches... One team I talked to were saying how they waited 2 years for the new GTS Cup porsche, and had over $499,000 invested to get here... They were very concerned that the car would be trashed...

The pirelli tires apparently do not work well in the cold. All kinds of crashes by cars exiting the pits after a tire and driver change.. Tire budgets were rumored to be $50,000 per car per race...

Pirelli is a spec tire for the series and had some teething problems...

The weather was cold and damp and got worse thru the night... But nothing compares with a tour of the pits at dawn, talking to competitors, crew and those who stayed up all night and the 1000 tales they all have to tell...

The sights and sounds of snarling packs of wailing porsches, interspersed with rumbling V8's and the occasional Ferrari (while they lasted screaming down pit straight is just music to a car nuts ears...

The lows are the ugly daytona prototypes... Just awfull looking cars that no amount of loving and makeup will make pretty... They just look ugly up close...

But, all in all a real deal event. Stand at the end of the pit straight and listen to the down shifting, stacatto barking engines as they come down from top speed and enter turn one and disappear into the infield... Just magnificent sounds.. "

Guess Grand Am is not BUDGET racing either.

Boro should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
No one ever said a DP programme is a budget program. That 50k tire budget for the 24 isn't news, that figure is right around ballpark for the Hoosiers as well.

Did these problems manifest themselves on both the GT and DP cars or was it primarily on the DPs?

DP's are animals now with no TC...when i was at TRD the dyno one of the DP long race engines was going at 572 hp... if any one cares They are built from reejcted or unsold Lexus V8 based engine discarded from a marine program!

Both
The Spec pirelli tires are a hard endurance compound. So cold weather Plus cold track = no grip.

The other challenge was the pirelli tire techs told the teams to run no greater then 40 PSI HOT. The Hoosiers last were run at 30 PSI HOT.

Four years ago the Old Good Year G19s were run at 23-24 PSI HOT.

Dang I love those G19s, but are no longer made. Wonder how the Dunlaps compare to the Old G19s ?

The quote for running a GT in Grand Am for the year was $1.3million according to someone I saw that was at the race, that was for a Porsche, I presume, first buy your Porsche. That was a TOP team

Aren't all the engines in GA limited supposed to be limited to 500hp?

BTW: The Lexus is suppossed to be down on power compared to the Pontiac and probably also the new Roush-Yates-Ford...

YES with a new 997 and spare parts at $400,000 plus a hauler at $200,000 before the season starts

I understand that a new Porsche GT3 Cup car that can be run in the IMSA GT3 Cup is $140K list price. What is added to bring it up to $250-300K for Grand-Am GT?
