David Winstanley

This week's Autosport reports the death of competitor/journalist David Winstanley 1953-2014.

He started competing in the 70s in Formula Atlantic and FF2000. He mainly competed in rallying. He was famous for presenting 'Out of Control: The Rally Show' on M&M with Terry Metcalffe. Also was a cameraman, perhaps the most famous incident running away from the camera when he saw Andrew Gibert-Scott's flying F3 car heading towards him at Donington!

He loved motorsport and will be sadly missed.

I very much enjoyed his television shows on MotorsTV.

Colin Parkinson should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I met David in the mid ‘70s. He had his Lodge Corner Agencies in Crewe, selling customers race cars on commission. I think he was racing in Formula Ford or Ford 2000 and tried to develop his own Formula Ford. I remember him being on Look North TV trying to drum up some backing.

I was rallying at the time, and he was very derogatory about rallyists, me being the same about roundy roundy guys. Interesting that he turned to rallying later. And I also turned to a bit of circuit racing in later life!

I often bumped into him at Autosport or Race Retro. Always had a smile and never short of a witty comment. Anyone who met David will know what I mean. Never seemed to take life too seriously and will be sadly missed.

RIP mate!

Sad news indeed. David was always very kind to me back in the day. RIP Dave.
