Chevron Conundrum
Did anyone else do the quiz that appeared in the V8Supercar TV guide this year? It said in that publication <quote> "Answers and winners names will appear in the 2004 Bathurst Magazine, out early September" <end quote>
So, come early September, the Bathurst mag comes out with the answers in it, but no winners names They actually put two of the answers (16 and 20) next to the wrong question numbers, but ignoring that, I got all 20 answers right! I thought I would post this on here to see if anyone else got them all right and if they or anyone they know won because Chevron never return my e-mails! The winners to their Motor Racing Australia quizzes used to be published in the next issue but they stopped doing this a while ago. I am not upset if I don't win, but it is nice to know some lucky person out there actually receives the prizes. As someone who never misses an issue of MRA, AMC, or the V8 Series and Bathurst previews I can tell you that their actual mags are fantastic but I have always found this side of Chevron a little disappointing. |

I emailed the link to your post to Steve Normoyle, the Editor of MRA and the Bathurst magazine. Here's his response:
Hmmm... If you're chatting with these guys online, you might pass this on: The answers in the wrong order in Bathurst mag was totally my fault, an oversight that shouldn't have happened. As for the winners, I'd like to publish them (and indeed used to do it) but sometimes it takes until after deadline to get the first fully correct answer (our deadlines are not that long after the previous issue comes out, so the 'window' is not all that wide). I thought about setting a strict cut off date and taking the most correct one as the winner, but at the time we had deadlines shifting around and it just seemed a bit too hard. I felt that to be consistent either we should always publish them, or not at all. As for returning emails, in a perfect world that would always happen, but with the amount of emails that come through here, in addition to everything else (it's a hands-on operation here, not many staff, which means we tend to have to multi-task a bit) we've got going on, sometimes unfortunately there is just not enough time. So guys, we do appreciate any emails, and they are certainly not ignored, even if we don't always respond, and we absolutely do appreciate the fact that you're into the mags, because we do put a lot into trying to make them as good as we can. Steve" Just as a bit of extra, I can vouch for the 'few hands' point. There's Steve, who's flat out on MRA, the V8 Programs, the Bathurst mag and other specials, like the Rally magazine. There's Danny, who is the art and layout guru - he does MRA and Muscle Car and the book. There's Anne who answers the phones and also does all the mail order and subscription work. There's Paul, who's the ad sales guy. And there are Ray and John, the publishers, who are kept busy writing cheques for freelance contributors (well, in a perfect world, anyway...) Steve forgot that there's been a problem with their email for months now, which the ISP doesn't seem to be able to fix. Bruce Moxon |

Thanks heaps for passing that on Bruce.
I have to say I didn't realise it is such a small company, so not replying to my e-mails is understandable. So if there were no correct entries at the cut-off date, lets hope mine came in shortly after! |

I've had reason to phone Chevron twice over the years. Once the phone was answered by the Managing Editor, Thomas B Floyd, and the other time by ace race snapper Ray Berghouse. That's what I call "multi tasking..." |

Stoned Pony, any time you ever have to ask a question that starts "why don't they..." the answer is always the same; money.

These guys work hard and do a great job. Bruce, we should get you and Normoyle to hop in cars and have a go against eachother. Last edited by Trevor P; 30 Sep 2004 at 20:23. |

Steve and I did compete once - he had a distinct disadvantage - my car and it was on dirt. He'd hardly ever driven on dirt and I'm a former rally driver. So I beat him.
He was a pretty good driver in a Vee, if you remember, so he'd be no easy-beat. And he has a substantial weight advantage these days, ever since I ate that baby. But if anyone's offering drives??????? BM |
