Trimmer, Tony

Tony Trimmer came from the same era as James Hunt and they had some great battles in F3.

He did, I think teach at the Brands Hatch Motor Racing School, and he drove a very uncompetitive Formula 1 for a season or so.

Another drinking buddy from Brands as was his mechanic, Alan. He was a useful driver and who knows what he could have done with some competitive machinery under him.
Where is he now?

Tony Trimmer was born 24 January 1943. He won the British F3 Championship in 1970 and the Aurora British F1 championship in 1978. He turned up at Brands a few years ago and won the Derek Bell Trophy race there, and just 3 weeks ago drove to 3rd from the back of the grid in the Derek Bell Trophy Race 1 at the Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting.

Well I saw him the HSCC meeting at Brands last week, just chatting and catching up with a few folk in the paddock. He was living in Hythe. Maybe too nicer guy to have gone all the way to the top.

Had a one off drive in a Jordan 194 at Brands Hatch in Euroboss 2000. Has tested so many F1 cars he himself admits he can't remember them all! I believe the last time he drove a current car was in 1989 at Brands for Brabham. This gentleman has a huge CV and would take a long time to document! However it would make for interesting reading.

I think he has the record for most international non-championship Formula 1 race starts without starting a championship race. He even raced in the Swiss Grand Prix when it was non-title.

I always associated him with racing a F5000 Lola in the 80's. I was lucky to see him 3 or 4 times in Mondello. I remember as a shy kid asking him for his autograph and I was struck by how shy he himself seemed to be.

Tony Trimmer

My old friend and my mechanic in 1966 and 1967, the years I won the British F3 Championships.....as much down to him as a superb mechanic, just as the excellent driver he subsequently became himself.

See bottom of this webpage.

Tony Trimmer still works as an instructor at Brands at the Race School.

His performance at the Oulton Park Gold Cup last month was fabulous. 3rd place from the back of the grid in a car he'd not sat in before.

Yep remember it well. He had some epic battles driving John Jordan's Lola T332 with Alo Lawler in the McLaren. Here are some pictures from back then, the first three taken by Con Connolly, the other two by me.

Just wondering if anyone knows if Tony's F3 win at Monaco in 1970 is on film at all? Maybe some footage taken prior to the Grand Prix taking place. Would be good to see/know.Can any one help?

Regards John

Tony Trimmer himself may know. He's quite often on Facebook.

As Alan's said, Tony himself may know... if you're on Facebook, try friending him... he's very approachable and a really decent guy.

You might also want to have a look Roy's youTube channel as he shot a lot of footage around that time in the UK and abroad.
