Monterverdi/Onyx
having a little play finding some old f1 pictures I came acroos some pics of the Monterverdi Onyx team.
Now we all know they ran in 1989 and 1990 but I found THIS page with some photos of them on it and down the page is some pictures of a 1991 car. i know the team went broke and didnt run in 1991 but I didnt know they actually had a car planned for the season. does anyone know anything about these 1991 cars at all ?? (im obviously talking about the red cars) |

It looks very much like the original Onyx. I couldn't imagine Monterverdi were able to design and buld a new car, bearing in mind they couldn't run the old ones very effectively!
It is a sad end to a promising story. The Onyx was a good little car, and even managed a podium in its first year. By that measure, they had a better debut year than Sauber and Jordan, for example. However, the sale of the team to Monteverdi after the original backer Moneytron hit trouble was the end of the team, just 18 months after entering F1. |

IIRC, the rear wing end-plate size was reduced in 1991 (change of regulations) and the red/white Onyx car's rear wing end-plate seems to fit that.
Also, the 1990 Onyx ORE-2 had a much smaller engine cover than the red/white one has. |
