New cars for 2004
Does anyone know of any new LM1 or LM2 class cars in the works for 2004, other than the rumored new Bentley?

Tim Northcutt is probably the one who knows a lot about this.
Is the Piper car racing? Or has that one been taken up by another team? What about Audi, are they building something? |

Rumoured new Bentley?
Wendelin Wiedeking says that Porsche have designed, but will not build, a new LMP1 (wtf?). Audi are widely believed to be building a car, as are Courage. Lola were talking about it, but little has been heard for some time. It was also rumoured that SARD were attempting to lure Toyota back into sportscar racing. |

You mean BMS Scuderia Italia, not Scuderia Ferrari. Now THAT would be good.

BMS, should they win the FIA series would gain an automatic entry for the Ferrari and have said that they would take it up.
Prodrive also would have an entry as winners this year. Prodrive are at an advanced stage of talks with Aston Martin for a new N/Gt car. Mr Dor may be the money behind the project as with the Ferrari project. Oreca pulled out of the same talks, maybe because of the new Viper project? Last edited by Nordic; 1 Aug 2003 at 14:16. |

Norma have announced work on an LMP2 car....
I have been wondering about this also. Isn't it starting to get beyond the time when announcements of new cars/sponsors/deals would take place? It seems like it is time for design studies to be done and for materials to start to take shape. |

I think that due to the grandfathering of the current cars through the 2005 season, manufacturers are taking their time to get a product out, possibly in a wait and see attitude. Robert

2006 and 2007 should be great years as thats when these projects should be reaching their peak but still have exciting new projects coming through, i hope to have saved up enough to get there by then.

Yes, all the doom-and-gloomers are forgetting that new cars are not mandatory next year as current chassis' are legal through the end of '05.

Right
Good point,Mike.
Given all the LMP 900s currently racing in the ALMS how could one be negatve about the prospects for '04? Sorry, but it seems that the only cars being built are the DPs. Do new GTS cars count? Last edited by Kurt Maxwell; 11 Aug 2003 at 05:24. |

So when directly comparing the specs, which one has the better cards, LMP900 or LMP1? I mean it is obvious that the new cars might not be as realiable as they are newly developed and may have flaws. Which class should I put my money on without taken into account the realiability etc? /s. |

The way I understood it, Dyson bought Knighthawk's MG-Lolas from them....that disbanding seems to have been in the works for some time now...

From what I've heard, very few new LMP cars are being built yet, other than the Piper who helped design the new rules package. There are plenty of rumours but nothing has gone into production yet. Most of the new enteries are gonna be either GTS or GTO cars, the Masterati, the Pontiac, The Aston Martin, Lamberguini (sp).

>>Sorry, but it seems that the only cars being built are the DPs<<
Who said anything about GA or DPs? '04 is a transition year and if you think this year is bad, sure you'll think next year will be bad. Personally I think this year looks pretty good with the car counts in LMP. So its hardly "The sky is falling" as Chicken Little has been saying. |

I wouldn't say that the sky is faling, but compared to last year, numbers of LMPs are down somewhat in both the ALMS and the FIA-SCC...
Last year, ALMS fields had between 14-17 LMPs inthem, and now they're looking at 11 for most races, and the FIA-SCC (although Monza and Donnington both reached numbers comparable to last year - 16-18) has had at least two events with less than 10 cars.... I'm not a doom & gloom type, but there is plenty of hardware sitting in garages instead of racing.... Lister, Team Nasamax, Matthews, now the Doran-Lista Dallara, to name a few... |

i swear Mr. Maxwell has an In with the GA or he works there, Kurt is such a staunch supporter of it all, the race at the Glen was pretty good though the DP regs really do make them good racer amongst themselves. perhaps the ALMS should simply allow a DP class in their races to have for more cars...did I just say that?

If Mr. Maxwell was formerly known as "MaxSport," I believe he lives near where the FabCar DPs are built (in Carmel, Indiana, a subusrb just north of Indy).....I never got an answer from "MaxSport" on a query concerning whether he worked for or possibly knew someone who works with FabCar.....
Personally, whether he is or is not the same person is of no consequence to me...at least I can appreciate his insigth and what seems to be fairly reliable info about GA....even if I don't agree with him on the issue.... |

tim...as a personal friend of the aforementioned poster, it's nice to see someone take a civil approach to personal interaction. Kurt has no official affiliation with garra, what he is when you strip it all away is a die hard fan of sportscar racing, with a very realistic (even if seemingly cynical) view on the way things are heading. whether or not his predictions/opinions turn out to be "wrong" remain to be seen, but you can't fault anyone for drawing certain conclusions by looking at all of the availible information...especially that which might sometimes be convieviently overlooked by others, even if not intentionaly...
