Oh no they've put me with him/her!
Have any of you found yourself on post with someone you cannot stand and don't feel safe around, and if so, what did you do?

Yes - got the observer to move him - it was a case of either him or me!

Yes there are one or two.
The first one I try to avoid but recently found out he was on post with me half way through the day, so couldn't do anything about moving him or myself. It is a problem when he is the flag man covering you with the yellow. In future i will see if he is about then ask for him to be moved or I will move. The second one is only a problem when you start him talking so I avoid talking to him and if we are on the same post I go one end and hope he goes the other. |

There's one particular individual that I know of that not many people like working with! However, I have worked with him/her on a couple of occasions and you just grin n bear it - providing that any safety issues are not compromised! |

Mmmm. The reason for me quitting marshalling in Holland after 25 years is that standards here have fallen to a level that I can’t live with. So that’s no picking on individual marshals. But I do think some of the more senior marshals should know better then this. So it’s not my own safety that is questioned by me (I can always take of that myself, thank you) but the lack of safety that is provided to drivers that did it for me here.

Yes - I informed the marshalling club in writing that, given the circumstances, it was not appropriate for me to be posted with the person(s) in question. So far that has been adhered to.

I have been posted with an observer (not mark) that made me positivly scared. my concerns were aroused when he asked his stuffed bear if he should call race control and ask for a red flag!

After much deliberation between the two, with marshals on the exit of Gerrards dealing with an injured driver, the bear suggested it might be a good idea.

Who could ever forget being posted with a rotund american person, who had been there, done it and told everyone nearby about it.

Rather than the ones you can't stand working with, how about the ones you KNOW are carrying industrial magnets with them, and have done for many seasons. Or even worse the ones who seem to have lost the magnets at last, but you know better that the accidents have just been saving themselves
On SRB's original theme, it's always worth having a nosy at the signing on sheet towards the end of sign on if there is someone you can't work with, because if you leave it until you're on post you'll find it a lot harder to be moved. And finally (in a Trevor McDonald style), if anyone on post has pork pies, then that officially entitles you to a free move to the next post along (I'm sure I saw that in the blue book somewhere...) Al. |

There is one person who I would rather not marshal with again and thats because of the way he spoke to me when I was a trainee, 1 season on and I haven't been posted with him since. I do take a look at the sign on sheets when I sign on and although I will go where ever I'm asked to go if I see his name I ask to go elsewhere.

Two incidents spring to mind. One in which my "partner" vanished whilst I was trackside dealing with a dazed driver and another in which I was concerned by the actions of the flag marshal on my post. On both occasions I spoke to the the Observer on the post and had the situation dealt with promptly. I now keep an eye on the post allocation sheets and raise any concerns I have from the outset.

However, I'm glad to say that since he went back to the land of Uncle Sam I don't have a problem with anyone I work with, as we are usually the same team anyway. |

I have only had one bad experinece on post and that was under the Dunlop Bridge of all places. I was a Green badge at the time which means that you are not a novice. The IO and his mate thought that I was there to have the p**** taken out of me. The IO and his mate took pleasure in picking fault in every thing that I said or did which started to get on my nerve's after a while. It nearly ended up in a fight and the fact that there was two of them did not bother me. The only reason that the IO did not get a slap was that I was worryed that it might cause me problems in getting to marshal again. Why is it that some marshals think that being a marshal makes them a expert in motor vehicle technology?

No, I don't think it's pompous. As you say, we're volunteers and so entitled to try to enjoy ourselves. If you know that's not going to happen with a particular person then it's fine to ask for a change.

... for two days. Just me and a certain American.
I must have been real bad. And what a decision to make. Me on flags and leave him to sort it out, or I'll do the sorting out and rely on flag cover... Sorry! Whatever I did, I apologise! |

On a similar topic-and hopefully without upsetting anyone in particular (Evil-please don't rise to the bait!)I was at a well known circuit recently and a friend and myself watched a seemingly regular flag marshal (I guess he was a regular as he had years worth of patches on his overalls)on blue flags. This marshal probably missed about 75% of the times when a blue flag should have been waved-he seemed to be in a trance! Do the post observers not notice these things, or if they do-not say anything as they are a long time post comrade/friend? Or, if noticed, does anyone actually say-sorry mate but I dont think your up to scratch-you'll have to try something else? Before everyone starts jumping up and down-I'm just curious to know how a flag marshal is good enough to be picked to be on a post.
