How is prize money awarded in F1?
I read from the latest issue of the Autosport that by virtue of Joran's run to sixth in the Constructors' Championship by Sato's fifth in Suzuka, leapfrogging Jaguar in the process, it gets an extra 1.5M Pounds. Would anyone know the award of prize money in F1? Thanks

I don't think anyone knows really. Bit of a closely guarded secret. But it's all done very complicatedly!

Yup, it's all according to the Concorde Agreement, which is only supposed to be available to the FIA and the teams. So unless someone here starts a team, we may never know.

I think it is devided up in such a way as to reflect performance throughout the week-end - ie a percentage for grid position, a percentage for race position after X and then Y and Z laps and so on. This means that if a team does well in practice and the race but doesn't finish they at least go away with something. I don't think the prize money is all that special when compared to the commercial sponsorship.

I once heard that a top team get's about 30M Dollars prize money, but that was some time ago. (1997 or 98 IIRC)
Could be wrong though, can't remember where i got it from. |

Its not really a big secret. I dont have the formula on me right now but I know the money is divided between the teams based on points, WMC standings, and other performance variables.
