Race Licence Medicals

I always understood that if you had had a medical within a year of your licence application you could work the system so you only needed a medical every 2 years.
I see on the renewal from it says it must be sugmitted within 3 months of the medical. It looks if that loop hole (and cost saving) has been blocked.

No you can stretch you stressed ECG too 3 years but your correct 3 months for the standard medical

If you havn't read it, there is a thread on Racers section which discusses this.

I would call the MSA- direct licencing number on your paperwork- and ask. Have phoned them a couple of times recently about upgrade procedure and they were very helpful (and flexible!).

I wouldn't call them, it's a loop hole so just hope they dont read this and other threads and close it.
The easiest way to find out is to renew online, a lot of people on here have got their new licences that way.
In fact it would be good if John could hide this thread altogher.

There is / was a pink A4 sheet with your appilcation outlining the requirements. If you need a medical, either resting or stress ecg or are upgrading you can't do it on line.

The ECG alerted somebody I know to a heart condition which he now has sorted. Without the ECG he could have had a fatal attack at any time. I dont mind spending a few hundred quid every couple years to be told it all works.

Just phoned the MSA to clarify what I actually need for this years license bearing in mind that I'm about to enter the third year of my ecg and my last medical was last March.The nice younf Lady told me I only need to do the ecg! ?????

I dont mind spending a few hundred quid every couple years to be told it all worksi guess if you live in a posh red light district it could but down my way a quickie for 30 quid will soon tell you if it all works ( so i am reliably informed!)

I do wonder of 45 years old is too young for ECG test

I think 45 is fine - there are a lot of stressed up 45 year olds... I do find it ironic that a National A is exempt - are you less likely to have a heart attack at Silverstone than Monza?!

yes i agree what is the difference all more BS to raise money look at the cost of Nat A versus Int C licence disgusting the medical has to be done every year plus ECG more uneccessary expense on top of the rip off licence fee i pay less for new road car licence and HGV licence that last way longer

Why spend money unless you have to? I've only ever had a National A because of the cost and I've raced at Monza, Nordschliefe, Spa, Le Mans, Clermont Ferrand, Dijon, Montlhery, Zandvoort, Magny Cours, Croix, Goodyear, Chimay etc etc probably more than 60 races all told.

We may know the same person Simon who had to drop out of a prestigious event because they wouldn't give him an International licence because the stress related ECG threw up a previously unknown problem. He was bitterly disappointed but....

What does amaze me is how someone can have a series of severe heart attacks, get a disabled badge because they have difficulty with heart and breathlessness and still get a race licence......an individual known to quite a few on this forum

When you look at all the cans and can'ts, Haves and have nots, the whole system does seem to be a bit of a joke, ou only have to look at the top of the FiA for confirmation!

Absolutely, it us just a rip off and further bureaucracy to justify their (MSA,FIA) cushy overpaid jobs at our expense. The cardiologist that did my last ecg told me the medical was more extensive than the one he does for a pilot!

If my heart gives up while racing I may hit the barriers at high speed, possibly, just possibly, hit another car with a full cage and a driver in a full harness and helmet whereas on the road I am much more like to hit another car which might contain a whole family AND I might be driving a 44 tonne truck.

As for the inevitable "it saved my mates life so I am happy to pay it" argument, those that want to know if they have a dicky ticker can go and have a medical anytime they want; the rest of us could conduct our own cost benefit analysis of the procedure.

Those of an ignorant socialist persuasion (sorry about the tautology) should advocate for an annual medical for everyone -- at someone elses expense of course.

but Andy the question is quite straight forward - if you want to race in Europe can you avoid having an Int licence? Certainly Spa 6 Hour is exempt (how I dont know but happy it is!) but what about the other circuit's?

I think some of the higher profile events should go to a kind of superlicense . . . . get some of the idiots off the track, physical fitness is irrelevant, but a brain scan might be considered

can someone clarify what events w eneed international licence for a si do beleive IF its designated International event a national licence does not carry weight BUT you can do a french german club race with yr EU nat a licence?

and how many events are designated International? LMC might be but I very much doubt I will ever do that so if I can do 6 Hour and UK events on NAt A I might just have saved myself £450 and I will get my annual company medical to check my ticker!!

I see this year that the under 45's have to have an ECG.Im gonig for mine again as its F3 Monaco and the Old Timmers.This one will take me to 60 and i will have a refink then..As long as i get there.

That's a resting ecg not a stress test so shouldn't be as expensive as your GP practice nurse or Al Weyman can do it and from what I was told today is probably meaningless.

Bonkers maybe, But I can put my hand up to being under 45

an hurs squash in a mo followed by an incredibly relaxing game of cards . . . they'll be luck to get a pulse by midnight I'll be so unstressed!
