Historically speaking.........

I just found this thread at Atlas, and rather than stealing someone elses work I'll just post the link

The new points system (it was only a matter of time for these figures to come out) would change a few championships.

But whatever system you're under at the time will influence the outcome of races. S if you're already safe you might start working for your team-mate. Or of you're not safe you might take one or two more risks. Interesting nonetheless.

THe more I look at it the more it will be safer to take the points rather than overtake.

I have to agree, who's going to push hard to take the win for the sake of 2 measly points?

We can always rely on the 'great juan'. But he'd go all out if he was fighting to 16th. The DC's and Ralf's of the grid have got even more reason to be boring now!

I think we'd need a few JPMs in the grid... people who'd go balls out for the win

Yes, less Ralf/DC/RB, more JPM/JV

If we had a grid full of drivers like Sato, Massa, Villeneuve and Montoya, F1 would be a much better place. Sure, they'd crash sometimes, but they would give it their all, no matter what position they are in.

But nothing's perfect is it? And it seems teams don't want two chargers for drivers for some reason.

Wonder how it would have affected the 1986 championship?

Interesting, but of course all the drivers might have driven differently because of the differnt points, so it can not be applied retrospectively.

I wonder about '86 too. If only I had time...

1986 was great. The best championship ever. Have any of the new rules made F1 more like it was then? No. Sometimes we can learn from the past (or at least not just ignore it).

Absolutely. Team orders, accepting second rather than risking a crash and so on. Impossible to really say, but I'm sure a few championships would be different.
