Glowing Exhaust @ Sebring 2002

I was looking through some of my old pics from the 2002 12 Hours of Sebring the other day and I was reminded of the spectacle I saw on Yojiro Terada's P675 AutoExe Mazda, for the exhaust was glowing bright orange and was spitting out a sizeable blue flame upon full throttle!! As you can imgine, I was quite amazed when I first saw this as night set in at Sebring. And I've been wondering since March...what's the story behind this exhaust? I was hoping you guys could provide some insight. Here's a link to a pic (not very good quality, however ). You can see the bright orange glow eminating from behind the right rear wheel.

The fuel mixture obviously caused the blue flame, but I didn't realize it would have such a dramatic effect on the exhaust piping. I guess a more pertinent question is why was the car running so rich in the first place?!

I remember an old article in Sports Car International when the LeMans winning Mazda 787B engine was being tested. The said the exhaust temperatures were getting the headers so hot that it was destroying the chassis on the car. They also said the massive silencer used on the dyno was getting so hot that the welds on the far side where becoming visible. Rotary engines have always had extremely high exhaust temps and lots of fuel overrrun.

One of the engineers I used to work with had worked with Outboard Marine to develop a rotary engined lawn mower engine and he said it was basically a small version of the Mazda and it had produced a continuous flame from the exhaust.

Yup. Hopefully the new Renesis will have much better apex sealing to prevent such wasteful combustion.

Of course, the best way to increase efficiency in a rotary is... A turbo!

each rotor inside the Rotory creates about 2200 degree, or atleast a 12A two rotor does.
