Channel 9 To Bid For V8 Rights?
An article in the Sydney Morning Herald last week suggested that 9 was considering a bid for a 5 year deal to televise V8 Supercars. They have already offloaded their domestic 1 day cricket rights to Fox Sports and are expected to do the same with the US and British Open Golf and the US Open Tennis. The article quoted the expected price of the rights at $20 million up from $5million for 10's current 5 year deal.Of course they may just be repeating their AFL tactics of forcing the price the other networks have to pay up with no real intention of actually buying them however these are numbers that will bring tears of joy to the eyes of The Artist Formerly Known As Avesco.

$20 million per year? You would have to have rocks in your head to pay that kind of cash.
According to the other thread about the grid reduction, #10 pays $4m a year currently.. |

I personally would hope it doesn't go there. Viewers in Northern States would have to see the coverage cut for the Irrelevant Rugby League....

do Avesco get all that or does some of the money go to the teams and the tracks? If it doesn't I think it should cause they need them too.

Nine will be cashed up after not having to spend a fortune on retaining the AFL rights from 2007 onwards. So they will have a hole in their weekend afternoon sports programming, especially in the southern states (Victoria, SA, Tas) and it seems logical that a bid for the V8 supercars is on the cards. They could pump it up massively and have a good quality product for much less than what Ten and Seven are spending on the AFL.
On a sidenote, I read somewhere (I think Crikey.com, but could be wrong) that AVESCO has done a deal with News Limited that sees V8s get much more coverage in News Limited papers, eg. Australian. With PBL (Nine's owners) and News in on the game, I wouldn't bet against some rounds being flicked off to Foxtel and a great promotional push being made based on V8s by both parties. |

It should be like the football, everyone should get a share of the pie, essentially avesco are only marketing the "brand" and should receive a small percentage, then the rest should be broken up amongst the teams and the tracks evenly.

S Doctor, I think you should prescribe yourself a couple of doses of reality and a course of business acumen, have an early night and call yourself in the morning if you still don't get it.

V8Supercars would just go from being second fiddle to the AFL to being second fiddle to the NRL.
The should go to the ABC, we'd get it ad-free (though we then might play second fiddle to the Saturday arvo club rugby ) |

There has to be room for an Australian dedicated motorsport channel somehwere. Showing V8's to Formula Vee. It would be my dream!
But dont give it to channel 9, barely anyone on that network knows anything about V8's and how to commentate a motorsport event. |

If Ch.9 were to put in a bid i doubt they would pay too much for it. If they were to become partners then they might.

I think Ch 9 are too busy plugging leaks to take on the V8s. Failing to get the AFL while 7 was already moving into top spot with their drama programming hurt them badly. Kerry's death added to the injury and finally the Comm games were no where near the saviour they wanted.
It may start to correct its self once the new owners move in. |

Whilst nine employ Eastlake I pray to God that they do not get the V8's. No commentator even comes close to the annoyingness and incompetence that one D. Eastlake shows whilst commentating.
Also I believe V8SA's newspaper deal is with Fairfax not News Limited. |

Channel 9 has been stuck in a timewarp for some time with it's programming attitudes, remember this is the station that thought Bert Newton hosting 'Family Fued' would work in 2006 and also it's response to the success of Popstars and Australian Idol was to relaunch 'New Faces'.
The only programming other than News and Current Affairs that does rate is either US import (ie ER & CSI franchises) or is third party produced and sold to them as a complete package (McLeod's Daughters, Backyard Blitz). And even the news and current affairs has taken a big hit recently with 'Sunrise' taking away 'Today's audience and the constant silly re-invention of Tracy Grimshaw on 'A Current Affair'. Channel 9's primary demographic is ageing, and ageing rapidly. The all important advertisers holy grail demographic off the under 30's have deserted the network. If Eddie Macquire's plans for the station do not include radical slashing and burning then they are in a lot of trouble for a lot of years. And this does not even cover the things that are wrong with CHannel 9's coverage of sport. This is NOT a place V8Supercar want to be. |

Just give it to someone who is not obsessed with:
- Foot Cam - Head Cam - Brake Rotor cam - Wheel arch Cam - Roll bar cam - Every single pitstop by every car - Slow cars limping to the pits in 32nd position - Tech explanations (I still get a laugh out of Greg Rust and the Watts Link at Bathurst - perhaps by now he knows where to point) ... and actually televises the motor racing - now THERE's an innovation. |

Falcadore - to put TV shows into perspective though - apart from news and sport, there is virtually NO Australian made show that isn't made and packaged by someone outside of the network itself - Grundy etc - they make and produce all the game shows, drama etc.
About the only one I'm not sure of would be Ten's Big Brother - is that solely a Ch 10 production or is that made by a 3rd party and then bought in as a package |
