Qualifying For Race 7and 8 Symmons Plains
Could somebody please explain how qualifying for race 7 and 8 worked on Sunday?
Did it depend on whether the driver was a dog owner, cat owner? Seemed a little bit confusing for the punter on the hill. |

Yeah a bit confusing but better a short sharp session than running for 30 minutes doing very little in the way of timing to only to go out in the last 5 minutes and do a 1 lap push much like F1
But confusing yes, maybe because of the shorter track and less cars |

Think it even confused Mr Crompton. He was talking up Cam Waters as being on pole for one of the Sunday races when the second half of the field were still to go out...

Noticed that, they got in a terrible muddle getting ready to hand over the cheque and do the pole interview then suddenly realising only half the field had had a run.

I'm glad it wasn't just me that was a bit confused and could not understand the format on Saturday. The schedule just referred to a normal length session as being "Group A&B" with no word on who or how each Group was made up.
I understand why they do it.... short lap , traffic problems with all on track at one, but..... I was only watching it in the background but every time I looked it seemed to be 2 or 3 minutes left in whatever session, so it became clear that the session was broken down into loads of mini sessions. I guess it will be the same format for Perth as well given the short lap time. |

The cars were picked based on pitlane order.
Essentially it created 2 groups with a car from each 2car team. Walk down the lane...you're in group 1, you're in group2, you're in group 1, you're in group2....... |

So... why not run 2 sessions as needed... and one group does a side of the grid... the fastest time of the day gets pole, and the rest of their group falls behind them...

The weekend was a little bit of "back to the future" when Supercar Q sessions were regularly split into half fields to give more clean air. Still running the Q1-Q2-Q3 structure made it more complicated though. Not convinced that it worked but those early short sessions DID mean that we didn't get the usual arsing about and game-playing with when they run - they all simply only had time to roll out of the lane and go for it on one set. |
